National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense…" With an annual budget of about $5.5 billion, we are the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities.

International Foundation for Science

IFS is a NGO (non-governmental organization) founded in 1972. Funding comes from governmental and non-governmental sources, as well as national and international organizations. The annual budget is approximately USD 5 million. IFS has 135 Affiliated Organizations in 86 countries, of which three-quarters are in developing countries and one-quarter in industrial countries. IFS has an international Board of Trustees. The IFS Secretariat is located in Stockholm, Sweden.
