About

The China Initiatives and Special Projects Office within the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Affairs (OVPREA) plays a facilitative role for ASU science and engineering faculty members seeking to conduct research and teaching activities in China on specific topics aligned with ASU’s strategic goals. Through ASU’s signature research and educational programs, we present to China what ASU has achieved and project an image of ASU as A New American University on the world stage.

Goals

To obtain maximum exposure of distinctive ASU activities and accomplishments with Chinese decision-makers and in Chinese media in order to convey the idea of ASU as a leading American university conducting cutting-edge science and technology research and education. To position ASU to take advantage of collaborative science and engineering research and teaching opportunities with leading Chinese institutions, as well as technology venturing possibilities.

Background

The China Initiatives and Special Projects Office (CISPO) is one of the tools designed to implement ASU President Michael M. Crow’s “New American University” agenda. In this new model for American research universities, global engagement is one of eight design imperatives. CISPO was officially launched in November, 2004 to coordinate key portions of ASU’s science and engineering engagement in China. It is part of a larger university effort to conduct research in China, coordinated by the China Council and the Office of the President.
