Sander van der Leeuw and fellow IHDP members convene in Beijing
Professor Sander van der Leeuw, Director of the School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University, recently spent ten days days in Beijing to attend two meetings. First, as representative of the Scientific Committee of the IHDP <http://www.ihdp.uni-bonn.de/> he met with colleagues of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other Chinese colleagues interested in, and concerned for the social dynamics of global change. The meeting was important to van der Leeuw because it "implied direct contact with the Chinese situation," and brought together like-minded scholars in China and abroad. Following that meeting, he attended the first Open Science Conference of the Earth Systems Science Partnership, which brought together around a thousand scientists from all over the world interested in diverse aspects of global change. This event was sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization <http://www.wmo.int/index-en.html> (through its World Climate Research Program), the IGBP <http://www.igbp.kva.se/>, the IHDP, and DIVERSITAS <http://www.diversitas-international.org/>, and was a follow-up to the 2001 Amsterdam Open Meeting on Global Environmental Change. Van der Leeuw hopes to work with international colleagues in the near future in order to better position ASU as a regional node for research of the social challenges of sustainability.
