THP 482: Theatre For Social Change

THP 598 Special Topics: Theatre For Social Change

Interactive theatre techniques (e.g., Boal, drama therapy, playback theatre) to examine and combat institutional, social, cultural, interpersonal, and personal oppressions. Lecture & laboratory, 3 credit hours.

The Department of Theatre will offer this as a General Studies course (even though the published Schedule of Classes doesn't include the GS footnote, it's really a GS for Cultural Diversity in the United States, as stated in the ASU Catalog).  This has also been known as the former "Theatre of the Oppressed" class, and offers students a highly participatory experience in learning about the "-isms":  sexism, heterosexism, racism, etc.

HUM 513/HUM 494/WST 598/ENG 598/ENG 494:  Queer Studies

An examination of recent research relating to homoerotic identities as that research impinges on the representation of sexual desire in cultural production.  We will consider major theoretical documents and key analyses of literature and related textual productions as to not only how homoerotic desire is presented as a thematics, but also how the larger textual tradition can be read from the perspective of the "disruption" of the straight world view.  Of particular interest will be the relationship between feminism and questions of sexual identity, issues in cross-culturalism, sexual identity and subalternity, and related questions like pornography, censorship, and cultural resistance.  The focus of the cultural texts to be read will be on dramatic and performance theater; there will be video recording of actual performances.
