Student Advocacy
The External Affairs office of the GPSA led by the Vice-President of External Affairs (an elected official), represents ASU graduate and professional students to the outside world and serves as the central source of information on governmental issues relevant to students at the national, state, and local level. Our goal is to serve the interests and needs of all graduate students regardless of nationality in our interactions with national, state, and local government.
At the National scale, we will focus on student issues within the current national legislative agenda, including student loans, tax legislation, and visa requirements. Important issues affecting graduate and professional students include the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, Budget Reconciliation, and Direct Loan programs.
At the State scale, we will focus on graduate and professional student issues within the current state legislative agenda, including university funding and planning. Our main focus for the 2006 Legislative Session at the State Capitol include funding the Arizona Financial Aid Trust Fund (AFAT), the HB2626 Work Study bill, and university funding. We also intend to collaborate with graduate and professional student representatives at the other Arizona state schools to further graduate student concerns statewide.
At the Local scale, we will focus on the Downtown Campus Planning phase and Tempe related planning. We will maintain a presence within local government circles so that they will consider our needs as they seek to recast and expand their relationship with ASU.
