Well Rounded Sincerely, Giving the Sun Devil his due Dear Editor: (In regards to “Devilish,” Fall 2005, by Bill Goodykoontz,) I read with interest (this article), and I pre-date Sparky, but can add to the history of the name change… In August 1946, a trio of returning vets, including Keith Turley, Jack Childers (and myself) took over the famed Campus Inn (C.I.). We had a request to feed the football team until the school dining hall opened. Per a suggestion by the newly formed Sun Angels, the (mascot) name change was brought up with the team, and generally thought a good idea. The three of us were pre-war members of the Tau Sigma Phi fraternity and with reactivation of the frat, the name change was taken up as a project. With the approval of the athletic staff — i.e., Couchie, Kensil, Lavik, etc.— and a few of the faculty, we initiated a campaign among the students. The C.I. served as the campaign headquarters with active participation of the Tau Sigs. Early in October we set up a table in front of Matthews Library for a vote of the students and with a majority vote, the Sun Devil name was approved. The football team was named Sun Devils in mid-season… There are many stories to be told of those days, but regretfully the years fade. The third member of the trio,
