Well Rounded

Dear Editor:
I don’t know if I’ve ever really noticed your magazine before, but today I had some time to
read through it and frankly was very surprised and impressed with its excellent quality. I found the ASU Magazine to be interesting in that it was “well rounded” with a diverse group of informative articles with just the right amount of information, ranging from class-alumni news, campus goings-on, and especially the article on achieving young alumni — all done in a fresh, crisp style. The magazine was well laid out and easy to read, which is a great accomplishment for this type of magazine, or any other, I think.

I am no expert in these matters, but I just thought I’d tell you what an ordinary reader’s reaction is. Congratulations, and keep it up! I’ll be sure to be paying more attention to it, and the university, in the future.

Sincerely,
Fred Schaffer ’78 J.D.

Giving the Sun Devil his due
Dear Editor:
(In regards to “Devilish,” Fall 2005, by Bill Goodykoontz,) I read with interest (this article), and I pre-date Sparky, but can add to the history of the name change…

In August 1946, a trio of returning vets, including Keith Turley, Jack Childers (and myself) took over the famed Campus Inn (C.I.). We had a request to feed the football team until the school dining hall opened. Per a suggestion by the newly formed Sun Angels, the (mascot) name change was brought up with the team, and generally thought a good idea.

The three of us were pre-war members of the Tau Sigma Phi fraternity and with reactivation of the frat, the name change was taken up as a project. With the approval of the athletic staff — i.e., Couchie, Kensil, Lavik, etc.— and a few of the faculty, we initiated a campaign among the students. The C.I. served as the campaign headquarters with active participation of the Tau Sigs.

Early in October we set up a table in front of Matthews Library for a vote of the students and with a majority vote, the Sun Devil name was approved. The football team was named Sun Devils in mid-season…

There are many stories to be told of those days, but regretfully the years fade.

The third member of the trio,
Joe Hartsig ’48 B.S.
