Koetter adds key hires to coaching staff
There will be some new faces on the ASU football sidelines next fall,
and not just the new crop of first-year Sun Devils who will be playing
for ASU. Coach Dirk Koetter announced over the winter that he had augmented
his coaching staff by adding Roy Wittke as offensive coordinator, Al
Simmons as cornerback coach, John Wrenn as running back coach and Grady
Stretz as defensive line coach. The new coaches bring many years of
experience with them, at the high school, collegiate and professional
levels.
Wittke has 27 years of experience under his belt, most recently as
Arkansas assistant coach. Prior to working for the Razorbacks, he spent
13 seasons at Eastern Illinois University.
Simmons is a 20-year coaching veteran, coming to ASU from San Jose
State where he was also the cornerback coach. Prior to arriving at
San Jose State, Simmons spent two years on the coaching staff of the
San Francisco 49ers.
Wrenn is well-regarded among high school football coaches and built
the program at Hamilton High School in Chandler into one of the best
in the state, with a win-loss record of 91-11 during the eight years
he was head coach. He compiled a stellar 223-46 win-loss record during
his 23 years as a coach at the high school level.
Stretz is a Tempe native. He was a four-year letterwinner at UCLA,
and was part of the school’s 1993 Rose Bowl team. He comes
to Arizona State after having spent the past eight years at the University
of New Mexico, where he coached the defensive line and safeties.
