Google to rent space on Tempe campus
Internet search engine giant Google, Inc. announced March 10 plans
to open an office on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University as
part of its continued efforts to build out a Phoenix-area operation.
The new Google office space, located primarily at the University Services
Building, an ASU administrative building, will be primarily focused
on engineering, operations and IT support functions and is part of
its worldwide effort to build engineering centers in locations where
there are great engineers.
Google will initially lease 10,000 square feet of office space, which
will accommodate approximately 50 or more employees. The plan is that
Google would expand its space in this building to 28,000 square feet
by July 2006, which could then accommodate approximately 150 employees.
The lease rate for Google is $20 per square foot, which is market rate
compared to equivalent space in the Tempe area.
“
Our new location on the ASU campus will offer our employees the quality
work environment we strive for, including access to ASU students, faculty
and amenities,” said Douglas Merrill, Google’s senior director
of information systems. “We are looking forward to a long relationship
with ASU.”
Merrill has joined the Ira Fulton School of Engineering’s Department
of Computer Science and Engineering Advisory Board.
There will be joint education and research projects involving Google
and ASU, and the two entities are exploring additional opportunities
for future collaboration such as adjunct faculty appointments for Google
employees and internship opportunities for ASU students.
