Reports from Sun Devils everywhere

Herberger College of Fine Arts

Herberger College of Fine Arts Last fall was a very busy one for our chapter. On Oct. 29, we had the Herberger Art Walk during the Homecoming Block Party at the Tempe campus. You can see some of the fun we had at http://herbergercollege.asu.edu/alumni/artwalk/highlights.html.

On Nov. 8, three of our fine arts undergraduates received awards from the alumni chapter at the Dean’s Scholarship Reception.

We’re proud to announce that by Dec. 31, The Ira Fulton Challenge to the Herberger College was fulfilled by its alumni, faculty, staff and students. The college was invited to match Fulton’s contribution of $50,000 and it exceeded that goal, with totals in January reported at more than $78,000.

We also want to celebrate the accomplishments of Tony Carrillo ’04 B.A. His comic strip “F Minus” not only won Best College Comic Strip from MTV before he graduated last year, he also got an opportunity to work for United Media, a major comic syndicate. For information on the chapter, contact Deanna DePass Stulgaitis at (480) 965-8985 or Deanna.stulgaitis@asu.edu.

African-American

The African-American Chapter is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2006.

During Homecoming, the chapter entered a float in the parade in partnership with the Black and African Coalition. The float was titled “First Family.”

For information on this chapter, contact Ordell Jones at (480) 965-1930.

American Humanics

One of the unique things about the American Humanics program is a tradition known as the Etiquette Dinner. At the end of every fall semester, students who are nearing graduation are invited to join the members of the Center for Nonprofit Leadership & Management’s Community Leadership Council for dinner in the home of a prominent leader of the nonprofit sector, Kate Forbes. This evening is an opportunity for the students to learn the arts of networking, toasting, dining and social etiquette.

Members of the American Humanics chapter were determined to begin taking part in this tradition; luckily, last fall, the members of the Community Leadership Council were in need of a couple of extra pairs of hands in the kitchen. Candice Moore, chapter president, and Matt McGilvray, chapter treasurer, volunteered as meal servers for the event. Since both have experience serving with a local catering company, this was more fun than work, as well as an opportunity to interact with the students and show their support of both the American Humanics program and the council. Next year, the chapter hopes to play a bigger part in the evening and continue the tradition of equipping future nonprofit leaders with the knowledge of which utensil is the salad fork!

For information about this chapter, contact Candice Moore at (602) 273-6852, ext. 124 or candice@aawl.org.

Barrett Honors College

Our chapter will be hosting the second annual Celebrating Honors Fundraising Dinner on April 26. This event follows the Celebrating Honors Thesis Symposium, which is an annual event that showcases many of the exceptional honors college students and their recently completed thesis projects. Funds raised from the dinner will be used to sponsor honors students in their work on their thesis, which is the culmination of their honors experience.

Tickets to the dinner are $60 each, or $50 for ASU Alumni Association members. All donations will be appreciated, and any charitable donation of more than $30 may be considered tax-deductible. We are also looking for individuals to sponsor a student participating in the symposium so they may attend the dinner.

Contact Stephanie Shafer, the Celebrating Honors Dinner committee chair, at Stephanie.Shafer@asu.edu if you are interested in making a donation or attending the event. Tickets will be available for the event in late February.
We will have our next board meeting at 6 p.m., May 18 in Irish 124. All honors college alums are invited.

For information on this chapter, contact Shafer at (602) 750-3228 or stephanie.shafer@asu.edu. The chapter Web site is http://honors.asu.edu.

Chicago

The Chicago chapter had a very successful end of 2005 and is looking forward to even more exciting events in 2006. The Sun Devil flag football team made it to the second round of the playoffs only to lose in a heartbreaker. We are ready to win it all next year! We also had a lot of fun watching the real ASU football team all season at the Cubby Bear in Wrigleyville.

Look for future sporting events involving our chapter throughout this year, including various ASU/Pac-10 Happy Hours, intramural sports (including sand volleyball on North Avenue Beach), a trip to Ravinia and Cubs/Sox outings. Thanks again for all your continued support in the Chicagoland area.

For information on this chapter, contact Matthew Gervin at (312) 399-9614 or asuchicagoalumni@hotmail.com. The chapter Web site is www.asuchicago.org.

College of Design

Our chapter is continuing to develop its alumni mentor program, which builds relationships between alumni professionals and upper-division undergraduate students. This program, which lasts for the entire academic year, has been successful helping inspired students to gain insights and receive professional advice from their mentors. Usually the relationships last long after the program ends.

We’re also gearing up for the sixth annual College of Design Alumni Chapter Scholarship Endowment Golf Tournament this summer. Last year’s event was held at Ocotillo Golf Resort, hosted more than 60 players and raised more than $8,000 for an endowment for College of Design student scholarships. Stay tuned for an update on this year’s tournament.

For information on this chapter, contact Iris Look at (602) 268-6778 or ilook@isongdesign.com. The chapter Web site is www.design.asu.edu/alumni/.

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences alumni chapter is hosting the seventh annual International Wine Festival to endow scholarships offering study-abroad opportunities for ASU students. The fun will start at 4 p.m., Saturday, April 8, at Old Main on ASU’s Tempe campus.

Guests will sample a variety of international wines, nibble on hors d’oeuvres, enjoy music and participate in a silent auction, all while supporting a great cause. Please help us make this the best year yet.

Tickets are $50 per person and can be obtained by check (made payable to the ASU Foundation) or credit card. Go to https://clas.asu.edu/alumni/chapter/
WineFestivalTickets.aspx to order your tickets online or contact Linda Raish
at (480) 965-0377 or Linda.raish@asu.edu for information.

Sponsorship opportunities for the festival are still available – for information, contact Josh Aylesworth at (480) 607-8858.

For information on this chapter, contact Martha Carter at Martha.Carter@asu.edu.

College of Teacher Education and Leadership

The newly created College of Teacher Education and Leadership alumni chapter is off to a great start.

Chapter president Kimberly Allen addressed more than 1,000 graduates and family members at our fall convocation ceremony in December, encouraging them to continue their relationship with the college and university through alumni activities.

We are participating with the Channel 12 School Solutions Team — this on-going event is a great way for us to connect with the community. Volunteers staff the phones for a two-hour period, answering questions from the community about school-related issues. We can always use another listening ear, so come join us.

For information on this chapter, contact Lauren D’Amico at (602) 543-6327 or Lauren.damico@asu.edu. Our Web site is www.west.asu.edu/coe/alumni.

Colorado

Colorado alums – plan to join your fellow Sun Devils when the ASU women’s gymnastics team faces the University of Denver. The meet is scheduled for 6 p.m. March 18 in the Hamilton Gymnasium at the Richie Center. Join your fellow Sun Devils for a pre-game social happy hour. For information, contact Derek at ASUDerek@gmail.com.

While you’re filling your 2006 calendar with events, save the date for a fall football extravaganza. On September 16, the Sun Devils will travel to take on
the University of Colorado in Boulder.

E-mail ASUDerek@gmail.com now if you are interested in getting on the e-mail list for ticket information. And visit www.ASUColorado.com regularly for updates on all our great chapter activities.

Criminal Justice and Criminology

We have many events in the works for our alumni; please check our Web page for events, scheduling, and details: http://www.asu.edu/alumni/groups/schcrimjstce.html.

If you want to interact face to face, our chapter members meet the second Monday of every month at 6 p.m. on the West campus. For further information, including precise meeting location, e-mail Angela Marnell at ammarnell@aol.com.

Greater Philadelphia chapter forming

Are you a lonely ASU alum, wandering the streets of Philly or Wilmington or drifting along the Jersey shore, looking for the maroon and gold?

Patrick Janovsky, an alum in the greater Philadelphia area, is wholeheartedly committed to bringing the Sun Devil spirit to the Delaware Valley and southern New Jersey. Dedicated and energetic area alums are needed to help him launch a chapter of the ASU Alumni Association.

There are nearly 6,000 alumni in this area, and Janovsky hopes that you’ll join him in building the chapter into a place where Sun Devils can connect through athletic, cultural and social activities, support the university and overall make ASU a visible and meaningful presence.

A steering committee is being formed now to ready the chapter for its launch. For information on the Greater Philadelphia chapter-in-formation, or to become involved, call 1-800-ALUMNUS or e-mail alumni@asu.edu.

Greek Alumni

The newly formed Greek alumni club wants to build on the success of this fall’s home game tailgates and mixers. This is a perfect way for ASU fraternity and sorority alumni to have fun and stay connected.

This spring we will elect new officers and finish planning next fall’s events. For more information on being a part of the our club, contact Phillip Foster or Mike Najor at (480) 965-5292 or visit our Web page at www.asu.edu/mu/greeklife.

Houston

Houston area alumni had road trips planned to watch the ASU baseball team this spring, along with other alumni chapters around the state. Chapter members traveled to Corpus Christi, Texas, March 10-12 to see ASU play Texas A & M, Rice University, and Texas Christian University. Some of us also traveled to Austin on March 14 to see ASU play Texas.

Other chapter events coming up include chapter officer elections, which will be held in April; our summer happy hours, which will resume in May; and we plan to take in an Astros game later this summer.

For information on this chapter, contact Lisa Spence at (281) 792-5859 or Elizabeth.a.spence@nasa.gov. The chapter’s Web site is http://aspin.asu.edu/alumni/houston.

Interdisciplinary Studies

The Interdisciplinary Studies alumni chapter (formerly known as BIS Alumni) had its semi-annual alumni graduation party following convocation on December 14, 2005. All graduates and families were invited down the street from the ceremony to Saffron restaurant for complimentary eats and greets with other Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies alumni.

We look forward to our next social event this spring – and we’re taking suggestions now. For information on this chapter, contact Russell Lucci at (480) 231-4523 or send e-mail to CFADEL@jcl.com.

Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering

The Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering alumni recently welcomed more than 1,100 newly minted graduates to their ranks. In December, the school awarded 733 undergraduate degrees, 344 master’s degrees and 63 doctoral degrees. ASU’s engineering alumni now number more than 26,000!

As the Fulton School approaches its 50th anniversary next year, we want to stay connected with you. Let us know where you are and what you are doing. Keeping your information updated ensures that you will receive Full Circle, the Fulton School’s alumni magazine. Please contact Jennifer Grentz at (480) 965-0213 or jennifer.grentz@asu.edu for information.

Leadership Scholarship Program

Last fall, the chapter held two very successful events. We sponsored the October LSP student meeting on Oct. 4 at the Memorial Union; 17 LSP alumni participated in a panel discussion about their professions, ASU experiences, graduate/law school, family life, and community involvement. LSP students asked great questions during the 90-minute discussion, and then stayed after the meeting to talk with LSP alumni.

The alumni chapter also sponsored two activities during Homecoming weekend. Over 100 LSP alumni, current students, and guests gathered at Tempe Mission Palms for the annual LSP Homecoming Reunion on Oct. 28. Current LSP students led a program that highlighted the accomplishments of the talented students who are involved in the Leadership Scholarship Program. On Oct. 29, the LSP Alumni Chapter joined with Devils’ Advocates alumni at a booth at the Homecoming Block Party. Alums stopped by throughout the day, catching up with each other over lunch, while enjoying the homecoming parade.

This spring, the chapter plans to host a family barbecue and a wine tasting as opportunities for the LSP family to get together. For information on this chapter,
contact Jonell L. Lucca at (480) 699-0377 or jonelllucca@yahoo.com. Catch up on recent LSP activities with our chapter blog at http://lspalums.blogspot.com.

Los Angeles

Our chapter has been keeping the Sun Devil pride alive in the last couple months with a fifth-year-in-a-row victory over the University of Arizona’s Los Angeles alumni chapter in our annual bowling tournament. We also hosted Sparky's Touchdown Tailgate Party and Pep Rally before the UCLA football game in November and supported the women's basketball team when they played at UCLA in January with more than 120 alumni, parents and friends. In mid-March, we had a successful ASU Alumni in Entertainment event as ASU's Herberger College of Fine Arts kicked off the new School of Theatre and Film and a new B.A. degree in Film.

April 21-23 we'll cheer on last year's College World Series participant Sun Devil baseball team as they play UCLA, with a pre-game event on Saturday, April 22, in Westwood, Calif. And don’t forget to dust off your golf clubs for the annual Cal Devils Golf Tournament, which benefits ASU athletics. This year’s event is slated for June 2.

For information on our chapter, or to sign up for our e-mail list, contact Eddie DeVall at 323-653-4578 or edevall@asualumni.org. The chapter Web site is www.lasundevils.com.

Los Diablos

Last year was a very busy and exciting one for the Los Diablos Latino alumni chapter. The Los Diablos Scholarship program, as one of the members of the ASU Hispanic Community Partnership Scholarship Program, awarded new tuition waiver scholarships to 30 very promising Arizona students. To help ensure their academic success and involvement, all student recipients participate in the Puentes Program where they are paired up with a Los Diablos Alumni Board Member for mentorship and leadership opportunities. The Los Diablos Scholarship program, through the ASU Una Promesa Campaign, received a generous $50,000 contribution from Art Othon, on behalf of Arizona Public Service/Pinnacle West Corporation.

The chapter recently hosted the 10th Annual Los Diablos Latino Basketball Tournament in February at the ASU Tempe campus, and the Inaugural Los Diablos/Una Promesa Golf Tournament was held on January 27th at the Legacy Golf Resort in Phoenix. Special thanks go to our honorary chairs: U.S. Rep. Ed Pastor, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, and ASU President Michael Crow.

The Los Diablos alumni board encourages everyone to continue supporting the chapter and the Los Diablos Scholarship Program. For information, e-mail losdiablosalumni@yahoo.com.

National Capital (Washington D.C.)

In addition to our regular happy hours this year, the National Capital chapter will be scheduling a community service project with Washington Parks & People. Also on tap will be preparations for our upcoming softball season and our annual trip to the Virginia Gold Cup.

For information on this chapter, contact Matt Enderle at (202) 607-4883 or matt.enderle@gmail.com. Also, visit our Web site at www.dcsundevils.org.

New England

Wintertime in the Northeast can be a trying time for those used to sun-splashed Tempe afternoons, but the New England chapter continues to prove that Sun Devils can thrive in any climate.

In December, the chapter joined forces with other Pac-10 alumni clubs for the annual Toys for Tots Happy Hour. Through the generous donations from New England alumni, we were able to make the holidays a little more joyous for some of the less fortunate children in our community, and as always, we had a good time doing it. In January, a hardy group of alumni braved the elements for the annual Alumni Ice Skating outing on Boston Common, an event that features more than 10 local alumni groups.

As the warmer weather returns to New England, the chapter calendar heats up with some of our most popular events. Don’t miss the second annual Pac-10 Golf Outing in May, or the return of Pac-10 Beach Volleyball in July. Our after-work happy hour series also continues with get-togethers in April and June. For information about the chapter or to subscribe to the e-mail update list, contact Jeffrey Olen at (617)784-4971 or jeffreyolen@asualumni.org. The chapter Web site is http://www.asu.edu/alumni/groups/newengland.html.

Northern California

The Norcal chapter will be gathering at Stanford April 28 – 30, when ASU visits the Cardinals for a series of baseball games. There will be a chapter pre-game barbecue April 29; tickets are available through the chapter. Please visit our Web site at www.norcalsundevils.com for details.

On April 30, members of our chapter will also participate in “Pat’s Run,” a tribute to ASU alum (and Arizona Cardinal) Pat Tillman, in San Jose, Calif. We’re organizing a chapter-based team. More information on the run is available by visiting www.patsrun.com; more information about our team is available on our Web site.

We’re also planning a wine tasting trip sometime this spring, so stay tuned and keep checking our Web site.

For information on this chapter, contact James Roosevelt at james.roosevelt@yahoo.com or Peter Olson at info@norcalsundevils.com.

Orange County

Our chapter’s participation in the annual Newport Beach Boat Parade cruise was a great success. We had almost 100 Sun Devil alumni cruising with us through Newport Harbor on our boat. We would like to thank Bill McKusick for taking charge and organizing the event.

We have a great year in store for Orange County alumni. Check http://ocalumni.asu.edu for 2006's events. For information on this chapter, contact Chris Bissonnette at (949) 225-9398 or chrisbissonnette@aol.com.

Phoenix

The Phoenix Sun Devils will host their “Day at the Races” at Turf Paradise on Saturday, April 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost will be $40 and will include admission, race program, lunch and a group photo.

For information on the Turf Paradise event or other events hosted by this chapter, contact chapter president Mike Hosier at (602) 228-1800 or by e-mail at mike@hosierrealty.com.

San Diego

The San Diego Devils had a very busy fall, which included getting together at The Local (an ASU alumni operated restaurant/bar) to watch Sun Devil football games, a chartered bus trip to join the Orange County and Los Angeles chapters at the Rose Bowl for the ASU-UCLA game and the "Territorial Bowl" challenge where we went toe-to-toe at the bowling lanes against the University of Arizona alumni club.

This year promises to be even busier and we hope to see even more of our San Diego alumni family at our events. For all the latest on our activities, visit www.sdsundevils.com. If you would like to get involved with our chapter’s board or have any questions, contact Andy Hanshaw at sandiegochapter@asualumni.org.

School of Community Resources and Development

This fall, our chapter hosted a happy hour at Macayo’s in Tempe in partnership with the American Humanics Chapter, supported the Alumni Hall of Fame and Homecoming events, and hosted a game/fundraiser at Tempe’s annual Halloween family night.

Our cornerstone event is the 11th annual Glenn Cheatham Memorial Golf Tournament at ASU’s Karsten Golf Course, which is slated for Saturday, April 15. Tee time is 1 p.m. and all ASU alumni and friends are welcome as players, sponsors, silent auction donors, or to join us for our barbecue lunch. Event details are online at http://scrd.asu.edu. The event supports scholarships and since six to eight students from the school work with alumni on all aspects of the event as part of their coursework. Please join us.

We also welcome any alumni interested in volunteering on our board or any of our committees, whether or not you live in Phoenix. We will match your skills and interests with our efforts to reach out to our 2,000 alumni globally.

Finally, please take a moment to consider nominating a fellow alumnus, or to self-nominate, for the 2006 Alumni Hall of Fame. Deadline for nominations is May 5. See complete information about our chapter and this special recognition at http://copp.asu.edu/alumni.

For information about this chapter, contact Karolyn Kiburz at (480) 990-1887 or karolyn@mcsource.net.

School of Global Management and Leadership

Our chapter had a busy 2005, with a schedule of events that included a mixer at Macayo’s, volunteering at the Homecoming Block Party, and a gathering at Nixon’s.

We are currently working on a community outreach event and are always looking for volunteers. We also hope to have a guest speaker at a March event.

We are currently looking to fill a few board positions. If you are interested in further information, contact Joy at (602) 740-5661 or sgmlalumni@yahoo.com. See our Web site www.asu.edu/alumni/groups/sgml.html for details on past and future events and for information on how you can support the alumni chapter.

School of Public Affairs

The School of Public Affairs alumni chapter has been working diligently to build the foundation for activities of our inaugural year. While the School of Public Affairs prepares for its July 2006 move to ASU’s Downtown Phoenix campus and launches a new bachelor’s degree in Urban and Metropolitan Studies, our chapter is reaching out to engage our alumni in meaningful, productive ways.

This spring our local alumni have been invited to a Phoenix-area social/fundraiser, a March 1 Tempe city council candidate debate, and the second annual alumni lecture with Jim Keene, executive director of the California State Association of Counties, on March 23. We will also assist the students of public affairs with their professional day and participate in a community service project.

Alumni Hall of Fame nominations are being accepted until May 5. Call (480) 727-6238 or see copp.asu.edu/alumni for information.

For information on this chapter, contact Alana Chavez at (602) 495-5441 or Alana.Chavez@phoenix.gov. The chapter’s Web site is http://www.alumniconnections.com/ olc/pub/ASUP/cpages.html.

School of Social Work

The chapter hosted a fall reception in ASU’s Secret Garden (on the Tempe
campus) for students, alumni, family, faculty and community partners. The chapter shared a series of e-mail “action alerts” with local alumni to mobilize graduates around key community issues, projects and needs such as the No More Deaths border relief project, the Friendship Families program and relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina.

We also hosted a workshop on post-traumatic stress and a reception at the Feb. 16 Social Work Job and Internship Fair. We will be planning an event this spring to introduce alumni to Mary Gillmore, the school’s new director.

We’d like to welcome our new board members, Mar Pollock, Kim Matura and Dominique Roe-Sepowitz. We’d also like to thank chapter president Kim Villareal, who represented all College of Public Programs graduates at the December 2005 convocation.

For information about the chapter, contact Kim Villarreal at (480) 991-0761 or xkim_Villarreal@netzero.net.
Our Web site is http://www.alumniconnections.com/olc/pub/ASUP/cpages.html.

Stickmen’s Club

The Stickmen’s Club battled the current ASU Lacrosse Team during Homecoming weekend, falling to the youngsters 10-6. Alumni team goals were tallied by Mike Clare, Craig Hochreiter, Marty Ahern, Stew Chan and Trey Reeder. Goalie duties were split between Jeff Myers, Ethan Furtek and Zane Haserot. More than 25 players flew in from all parts of the country to take part in the game and the alums enjoyed activities throughout Tempe during the weekend. We are looking forward to the rematch in 2006.

Join the Stickmen’s Club all spring as they show support for the ASU lacrosse team. The 2006 schedule is out, and features one of the toughest schedules in the country, including a March 25-26 trip to play Colorado State and the University of Colorado. The team concludes its season on April 15 with a 7 p.m. home game against the University of Arizona. For more information, visit the official team website at http://laxdevils.com. Home games are played on the ASU band field on the Tempe campus.

For information about this chapter, please contact Trey Reeder at (201) 208-7848 or treydevil@hotmail.com. The chapter Web site is http://laxdevils.com.
