Center targets sustainable engineering education
A new Center for Sustainable Engineering is being launched to help
understand and address some of the important environmental and social
implications of engineering in the modern world. The center, funded
by the National Science Foundation and the Environmental Protection
Agency at more than $2 million, brings together researchers from Arizona
State University, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of
Texas-Austin.
The overall goal of the center is to help future engineers design better
products and systems in a world where resources may be increasingly
limited and where globalization raises new
environmental and social considerations.
Some of the programs of the Center for Sustainable Engineering will
include holding workshops to improve engineering faculty teaching,
creating a website with peer-reviewed education materials about sustainable
engineering, and conducting a nationwide survey of sustainable engineering
programs and courses.
