News and Notes from Sun Devils everywhere

American Humanics

Twenty-two graduates from the American Humanics program (see above photo) were among 150 guests at The Phoenix Zoo on April 22, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the program. Jack Armstrong, who founded ASU’s nonprofit management certificate program in 1980, attended. Also attending was alumnus Lanette Rugis B.S. ’83, first recipient of the George F. Miller award, which is awarded to a graduating senior. Jennifer Lohse was the recipient this year.

The newly formed chapter officers for 2005-2006 are Candice Moore, president; Melissa Newton, vice president; Michelle Duenas, secretary; and Matthew McGilvray, treasurer.

For information about this chapter, contact Moore at (602) 273-6852 ext. 124 or candice@aawl.org. The chapter Web site is www.alumniconnections.com /olc/pub/ASUP/cpages.

Austin

It has been a fantastic year for the Austin Club. This spring we held our most successful golf tournament to date. We are also planning many events for this summer.

Besides our usual happy hours, we are planning a baseball outing to see our local team, the Round Rock Express. We’ll be hosting a Sun Devil Send-off again this year. And after summer, we’ll roll right into football season. Check our Web page for listings; we watch all of our games at the Fox and Hound, located at 4th and Guadalupe in Austin.

For information, contact Pedro Ovalle at (512) 947-8018 or asupedro@yahoo.com. The chapter’s Web site is http://aspin.asu.edu/alumni/austin/.

Barrett Honors College

On April 27, our chapter hosted its first Celebrating Honors Silent Auction and Fundraising Dinner. The dinner followed the Celebrating Honors Thesis Symposium, which featured thesis projects of more than 50 Barrett Honors College students. Sixty-five students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and donors attended the dinner, including Craig and Barbara Barrett, for whom the college is named. The dinner raised more than $10,000 for scholarships and financial support of student thesis projects.

We wish to thank everyone who helped make the event such a success, particularly those who donated silent auction items or made financial contributions to the event.

On May 11, the chapter awarded the 2004-2005 Outstanding Alumnus Award to Jim Rossi B.S. ’88. Rossi is the Harry M. Walborsky Professor and associate dean for research at Florida State University College of Law.

Our next board meeting is at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 7, in Irish Hall Room 124. All alums are invited!

We’d like to prepare a “Where Are They Now?” section on the Environmental Technology Management Web site for all alumni, as well as a directory of all the thesis/applied projects to emerge from the program. We’d also like to schedule visits by alumni to classes in environmental management. Plans are in the works to create a quarterly newsletter, and we’d also like to coordinate an annual dinner or barbeque.

On Aug. 17, the bimonthly Pac-10 Happy Hour will be held at The Living Room in downtown Boston. And don’t miss the always-popular Pac-10 Alumni Pub Crawl on Saturday, Sept. 24, which is a spirited tour of some of Boston’s favorite watering holes.

Of course, autumn in New England means ASU football, and as always the chapter will be hosting game-watching parties throughout the season. Sun Devil spirit is alive and well here in New England, so get involved and stay in touch with your alma mater!

School of Global Management and Leadership

We welcome all alumni and interested friends to learn more about the School of Global Management and Leadership chapter, which is based at ASU’s West campus. The alumni steering committee has worked diligently to establish an effective board of directors who will create more value for alumni. The board looks forward to planning networking events and career development seminars, providing mentor support, raising scholarship funds, and creating a close community between students and alumni.

If you or someone you know is interested in more information, contact Joy Butler at 602-740-5661 or sgmlalumni@yahoo.com. If you are interested in future events, visit the alumni calendar site at www.asu.edu/alumni/events /calendar.html.

School of Public Affairs

The School of Public Affairs Alumni Chapter was officially designated as a chapter of the ASU Alumni Association this spring. The following board members began their duties on July 1: Alana Chavez, president; Tara Plese, vice president; Jayson Matthews, secretary; Claudia Herrera, treasurer.

The chapter hosted its inaugural event on March 10. Nearly 90 alumni and guests attended a lecture on “Globalism and Local Democracy: New Challenges for Leadership and Urban Management” presented by Robin Hambleton of the University of Illinois, Chicago. A reception followed, which included a prize drawing for a free one-year membership in the ASU Alumni Association.

Alumni volunteers also worked with the Students in Public Affairs Network to host a Professional Day on March 26 at the ASU center in downtown Phoenix. Amy St. Peter, human services manager for Maricopa Association of Governments, provided the keynote address.

For information about this chapter, contact Alana Chavez at (602) 495-5441 or alana.chavez@phoenix.gov. The chapter’s Web site is www.alumniconnections.com/olc/pub/ASUP/cpages.

School of Social Work

Many thanks to Melanie Reyes, who has helped guide the development of the chapter.

The chapter has recruited more than 10 volunteer alumni leaders and assisted with the School’s Internship and Job Fair on Feb. 24, involving more than 200 students and nearly 60 agencies. The organization staffed an information table, provided door prizes, and contributed towards the cost of printing and mailing the event invitations.

Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication

The new Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication Alumni Chapter is pleased to announce the following chapter board officers who took office on July 1: Manny Romero, president; Jess Koldoff, vice president; Jessica Prunty, secretary; John West Jr., treasurer.

Prunty met with the Cronkite Endowment Board in April to offer the group’s assistance with the Nov. 1 Walter Cronkite awards luncheon. Two other goals for the group are to offer students opportunities for networking with alumni and to help the journalism school raise funds for its equipment and other needs.

The chapter plans to co-host a Homecoming tent party with all of the schools and colleges that will be moving downtown. Watch for details on that event, slated for Oct. 29.

Since there are more than 6,000 Cronkite School alumni worldwide, the chapter will publish an alumni directory in both hard copy and CD to sell to graduates as a networking tool in the coming year.
For information about this chapter, contact Romero at (480) 727-3116 or Mlromero@asu.edu. The chapter web site is http://cronkite.asu.edu/alumni.html.
