News and Notes from Sun Devils everywhere

African American

Our chapter was proud of its float in the 2004 Homecoming Parade and our sponsorship of a leadership conference with the African-American Men of ASU. Both events were held in November.

On Feb. 16, we held our 4th Annual Scholarship Dinner in Carson Ballroom. Yetta Gibson from Fox10 was the guest emcee for the evening and our guest speaker was Matthew Whitaker from ASU’s history department. Thanks to everyone for such a successful event.

Our regular chapter business meetings are scheduled at 6 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the ASU Visitor Information Center on the corner of Rural Road and Apache Boulevard.

For information about this chapter, contact Ordell Jones at (480) 965-1930 or ordelljones@asualumni.org. The chapter’s Web site is http://aspin.asu.edu/alumni/african.

Austin Club

The Austin ASU Alumni Club had a busy year in 2004. This was the first year where we were involved in college recruiting, and we held our first Sun Devil Send Off. We had game-watching parties for ASU football and had our first road trip to see ASU take on Rice University. The club has a lot planned for 2005, including our annual “Best Ball” golf tournament, monthly happy hours, the Sun Devil Send Off, and sports watching parties.

Please visit our Web site for further information. All of our sports watching events are held at the Fox and Hound, located at the corner of 4th Street and Guadalupe in downtown Austin. We are proud to serve the Sun Devils of central Texas.

For information about the chapter, contact Pedro Ovalle
at texazsundevil@yahoo.com. The chapter’s Web site is http://aspin.asu.edu/alumni/austin.

Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies

After a successful gown collection at Convocation in December, we are planning on continuing the drive to collect gowns for future graduates of the BIS program.

We worked with the BIS College Council during Homecoming to create a float, and we were successful in our Homecoming Week Bake Sale as well.

We have elected Nicole Horn as our new director of membership, and we are looking forward to continuing our membership drive. We have a flurry of events planned for the spring season, and we look forward to our May BIS graduates having the opportunity to join the BIS alumni chapter. Check us out and join the fun.

For information about this chapter, contact Danica Levy at (480) 250-9871 or bis_alumni@yahoo.com. The chapter’s Web site is www.geocities.com/bis_alumni/.

Barrett Honors College

Our chapter will be hosting the first Celebrating Honors Silent Auction and Fundraising Dinner on April 27. This event follows the Celebrating Honors Thesis Symposium, which is an annual event that showcases honors college students and their recently completed thesis projects. Craig and Barbara Barrett, the benefactors for whom the Barrett Honors College is named, will be our honored guests and featured speakers. Funds raised from the dinner will be used to sponsor honors students in their work on their thesis.

Tickets to the event are $75 each. All donations will be appreciated, and any charitable donation over $30 may be considered tax-deductible. Donations to sponsor a student participating in the Celebrating Honors Thesis Symposium to attend the dinner are also welcome. Questions about the symposium should be directed to Jennifer Adkins at (480) 965-0612 or addy@asu.edu. To find out about the dinner, contact Stephanie Shafer at (602) 354-3281 or stephanie.shafer@asu.edu.

This semester, we will sponsor pre-law panels in April. If you are interested in serving as a pre-law mentor or would like to mentor a student in another field, e-mail Jim Tucker
at jttucker@bryancave.com.

Other upcoming events supported by our chapter include the Barrett Honors College Convocation on May 11. Keep in touch and get involved.

Later in the year, we’re hatching a plan for a roadtrip to the ASU-LSU game on Sept. 10. We’ll watch other ASU football games at Joe’s, our official game watching location. Joe’s is located at 944. W. Weed St. in Chicago.

College of Extended Education

The College of Extended Education chapter has gotten the year off to an eventful start.

On Feb. 26, we enjoyed a private tour of Bank One Ballpark. The tour included viewing the field from ground level, sitting in the dugout and visiting a luxury suite and the visitors’ clubhouse. Members also enjoyed dinner in the press box suite of TGIFriday’s Front Row restaurant.

On April Fool’s Day, we boarded the “S.S. Extended Ed” for a cruise of Tempe Town Lake. After docking, the group enjoyed appetizers at Gordon Biersch on Mill Avenue and a prize drawing that benefited the alumni scholarship fund.

Thanks to everyone who attended and made the lunch a success.

We’re very proud of some of our fine arts alumni who are making headlines these days, especially Cyndi Coon, whose greeting card company was featured on HGTV’s “Crafters Coast to Coast”; John W. Jackson, who was casting director for the film “Sideways,” which won the Golden Globe for best comedy and received five Oscar nominations; and Daniel Mayer, who appeared on a recent episode of ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”
