Building on its strengths and seeking to address the national nursing faculty shortage, the ASU College of Nursing will begin accepting graduate students for a new doctoral program in fall 2005.

The program leads to a doctor of nursing science (D.N.S.) and is designed for nurse scholars who wish to pursue careers as leaders in health policy, health care delivery, nursing education and/or applied research. The innovative program will have three practicums: teaching, leadership and research, with the goal of optimizing quality of life and health resources.

Initial enrollment of five to 10 DNS students is expected to grow to 30 students after five years. Some candidates will likely be drawn from the approximately 175 students in the current master’s in nursing degree program.

Graduates of the program are expected to work in multiple professional disciplines, and make a positive difference in the health of society through education and the influence of policy.
