First Thursday: Governor on the Horizon
by Bob Jacobsen '63

The program is called First Thursday: Governor on Horizon, and both host Michael Grant and executive producer Mike Sauceda said the response has been good to Gov. Janet Napolitano's monthly appearance the first Thursday of each month on KAET's award-winning television show.

"We have always had the governor on before, like Bruce Babbitt, Evan Mecham, Jane Hull, but not on a regular basis,"said Grant, who has been the Horizon host since the show was founded in 1981. "It tended to be more episodic. On this show we take e-mail questions, and I ask her questions, so she doesn't always know what I'm going to ask or what we're going to talk about.''

Gov. Napolitano has a weekly radio show on KTAR, where Sauceda serves as a weekend anchor. The idea of a regularly-scheduled television show just came to him.

"We had her on right after the State of the State address,'' he said, "and I thought why not? She's a new governor, and she might want to do this. I asked, and she said yes.

"We think it's a no-lose situation for both the Governor and KAET.''

"In thirty days you can have a series of different things happening,"Grant said. The one thing he would like to see changed is a focus on one issue, provided there is not a pressing issue in the state. "Then the show is much more immediate."

"The public has access to her via e-mail, and she has access to the public,"Sauceda said. "We think it's a good thing."To send the governor a question, e-mail mike.sauceda@asu.edu

Horizon with a Hispanic perspective
by Bob Jacobsen '63

KAET-TV launched a new show June 22 called Horizon/Horizonte, which the station hopes will generate more interest on Hispanic issues throughout the Valley and the state.

"It will be an extension of Horizon,'' said producer Mike Sauceda.

"Any subject will be open for discussion."The show will air from 1:30-2 p.m. on Sundays, and is being produced as a seven-pilot series. Whether it continues after that becomes a matter of money.

"We are getting no money from the university for this,'' said Sauceda, "so funding becomes a priority. Of course there are various ways of doing that, from underwriting or a donation from a private individual.''

Auditions were conducted in May and June for a host, with several people being interviewed. Even the title of the show is a work in progress. The hope is the pilots will be successful, and the show will become a regular part of KAET programming. If that happens, the first regularly scheduled show will be the week of Sept. 15, with Mexican Independence Day being celebrated the next day.
