ASU Alumni Association seeking Sun Devil love stories
The ASU Alumni Association is celebrating Valentine’s Day by sponsoring a “Love Story” contest. University alumni are encouraged to enter for a chance to win a variety of prizes, including a two-night stay at the Tempe Mission Palms hotel and tickets to see “Avenue Q” at ASU Gammage.
Stories submitted can be funny, heartwarming or serious, about brief relationships or a long-lasting marriage. The main requirement for submissions is that the story involves two ASU alums.
Winners will be chosen by a committee and notified by e-mail or phone. The deadline for the “Love Story contest is Feb. 5.

Alumni Association has “amazing year” in 2009
The Arizona State University Alumni Association faced a challenging economic climate in 2009, but its staff and volunteer leadership tapped their creative reserves in response, finding ways to continue the association’s support of the university and its current students, enhance the experiences offered to alumni, and expand its role as university tradition-keeper. They also found innovative ways to keep the organization healthy and stable.

Christine Wilkinson named 2009 Valley Leadership Woman of the Year
Valley Leadership has named Dr. Christine Wilkinson, senior vice president and secretary of Arizona State University, and president of the ASU Alumni Association, its 2009 Woman of the Year. Her outstanding accomplishments and visionary leadership will be celebrated at the 61st Annual Man and Woman of the Year Awards luncheon, to be held March 25, 2010, at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel, 340 N. Third St.

Alumni Association receives Green Devil honors for Homecoming efforts
The ASU Alumni Association was recently awarded the Gold level of the university’s “Green Devil” award for sustainability to acknowledge its efforts to reduce waste at the 2009 Homecoming Block Party. The association helped reduce waste in the areas of catering, waste/recycling, advertising and signage, offered promotional materials that were recyclable or compostable, and supported overall education of sustainable practices.

Senior Year Experience program partners with Boys & Girls Clubs
The ASU Alumni Association’s Senior Year Experience (SYE) program has partnered with the Valley of the Sun Boys & Girls Clubs for the 2009-10 academic year. A partnership between SYE and the Tempe Community Council, this program gives SYE participants on each of ASU’s four campuses a chance to help a deserving community-based program while having fun volunteering together.

‘Time’ names ASU’s Crow a top university president to watch
Arizona State University President Michael Crow has been named by Time Magazine as one of the top U.S. university presidents to watch. The Nov. 23 issue of the publicationincludes a feature on the 10 best college presidents, which includes Michael Crow.

Alumni Association names Will Foster winner of its 2009 Super Fan Contest
Some couples search for something borrowed or something blue for their wedding day, but Will Foster, winner of the Alumni Association’s 2009 Super Fan Contest, went looking for something maroon and gold! He found it in a spectacular ASU-themed wedding cake, and his love for all things Sun Devilish helped put his photo entry over the top.
Foster will receive a prize basket of ASU-themed goodies for his winning entry.

Alumni Association rewards service, support with Homecoming awards
The ASU Alumni Association will present its awards for Alumni Service and Alumni Appreciation during the halftime program of the ASU-California Homecoming game on Oct. 31. Jim Kane ’88 B.A.E. and Carol Peck ’71 B.A.E., ’75 M.Ed., ’79 Ed.D. will receive the Alumni Service Award, and Migs Woodside and Donald V. Budinger will receive the Alumni Appreciation Award.

Scholarship fund to honor Maria Hesse, outgoing Alumni Association board chair
A campaign to create a student scholarship fund has been launched to honor former Chandler-Gilbert Community College President Maria L. Hesse, who officially began a new job as vice provost for community college partnership with Arizona State University on July 1. Hesse ended her term as chair of the board of directors for the ASU Alumni Association on June 30 and continues on the board in the position of past chair.

Alumni Association picks up four graphic design awards
Seeing is believing, and the visual presentation of ASU Magazine, as well as that of a signature university event, Founders’ Day, recently received recognition in the 2009 American Inhouse Design Awards contest. All materials were produced by the communications and marketing department of the ASU Alumni Association, which publishes the magazine and produces the Founders’ Day event.
The department received kudos for its design work on three cover stories published in ASU Magazine during 2008: “Creating a University” (March), “What’s the Big Idea?” (September) and “The Future of the City” (December). The department also received commendations for materials used to promote the 2008 Founders’ Day awards dinner.
The American Inhouse Design Awards are sponsored by Graphic Design USA magazine. This year, more than 4,000 entries were submitted to the contest; the magazine reports that fewer than 400 groups submitting entries were honored with recognition. |
