FOUNDERS' DAY WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Continuing in a grand tradition, this year's winners are a diverse group,
united by their connection to ASU.
Alumni
Achievement Award
Phil Mickelson, a professional golfer who graduated from ASU in
1992, has more than 20 tour victories.
Young Alumni Achievement Award
Ed Koeneman ’92 B.S.E., ’94 M.T., founded Kinetic Muscles,
Inc., a company that designs and manufactures devices that help
stroke survivors regain function in paralyzed muscles.
Samantha Johnson ’00 B.A. organized one of the first conferences
in the western United States on women and disabilities as an undergraduate.
Since graduation, she has worked in the social services field and
is a member of the Mayor’s Commission on Disability Issues.
Faculty Research Award
Cecilia Menjivar joined ASU’s faculty in 1996 and is currently
an associate professor of sociology in the School of Social and
Family Dynamics. She is an internationally known scholar in the
areas of immigration and immigrant adaptation.
Faculty Service Award
Jose Ashford has been a professor in the School of Social Work
since 1984. Ashford is a sought-after expert in forensic social
work, particularly in the area of correctional mental health.
Faculty Teaching Award
Eric Susser joined the Barrett Honors College faculty in 1997.
He has been an innovator when it comes to course and program
development and peer mentoring services.
Staff Achievement Award
Laura Orr, academic advising coordinator for the School of Social
Work, has been employed at ASU since 1968 and has been described
as a “work horse,” the “energizer bunny,” a “quiet
warrior” and an “unsung heroine.”
