Chair's Letter
You do not
get to see history being made very often.
I got that experience when I attended the birth of the new ASU
Downtown Campus in Phoenix on August 15.
The campus is unique in Arizona, because it is an urban university
environment that lets students experience the education process
in the middle of an active city. The students are close to a
full range of governement, media, legal, medical and business
venues that offer opportunities for internships, mentoring and
networking with professionals in their field.
Like all the campuses of ASU, the Downtown Campus
will become an important partner in the community. it is geared
toward students
who are attracted to service-oriented careers. Each of the programs
on the campus will have a strong connection to the community,
whether
|
|
it is improving citizen's
health, informing residents on key public issues or addressing
the community's social and economic needs. The most amazing facet of the Downtown Campus is
how quickly it came about. With a gestation of just five months
since the Phoenix voters approved bonding for construction of the
campus, the first students began attending classes in the new University
Center at the start of the Fall semester. Unlike most newborns,
the Downtown Campus is not only walking, it is up and running.
The opening of the Downtown Campus is another exciting
accomplishment at ASU for which alumni can be proud.
