Association’s new travel program offers destinations for everyone
Travel programs are
a staple of successful alumni associations, and ASU will soon
join those ranks with the launch of Sun Devil Destinations,
a travel program designed for the young, old, singles and families
alike.
While traditional alumni travel programs target alumni over the age of
50, ASU plotted a different course with Sun Devil Destinations. More
than 75 percent of ASU alumni are under the age of 45, so the travel
program was devised so there are trips for our largest demographic, as
well as the increasing number of young families in the alumni base.
“Sun Devil Destinations has the potential to once again make travel a major
service of the association because of the widespread appeal it will have to all
alumni,” says Christine K. Wilkinson, president of the Alumni Association.
Trips are planned for both the active and passive alum. Be it bicycling
from Northern California to Mexico, or adventure tours that will take
alumni diving on the Great Barrier Reef to white water rafting in the
Costa Rican rain forests, Sun Devil Destinations will have appeal to
younger and adventurous alums. At the same time, there are trips planned
for families, such as a tour of America’s historic East Coast,
or traditional programs for travel to Europe and Asia. There will also
be programs that target special interests.
A cook’s tour of Tuscany, Italy, will surely tame the palate of
the culinary inclined alum. And Sun Devil sports fans can travel this
fall to almost any away football game, enjoying Sparky’s Touchdown
Tailgates at the same time.
“We set out to build a travel program that was different from any in the
nation,” says Regina Sanborn, director of member services for the association. “At
the same time, we wanted to make sure there was something for everyone, and that
there were as many educational components as possible in our trips.”
Sun Devil Destinations is the reincarnation of the association’s
former travel program, which offered more extravagant overseas trips,
similar to what most of ASU’s peers offer to their alums. That
program was ended in 2004.
The new travel program also offers a variety of family camps in conjunction
with ASU partners, as well as trips with ASU Study Abroad to team alumni,
current students and faculty on educational adventures.
Additionally, the YTB Travel Network will offer benefits similar to a
personal vacation club to association members. Through YTB, members can
receive discounts on airlines, hotels, rental cars, timeshares, theme
parks, as well as tickets to sporting events and theater productions.
All travel in Sun Devil Destinations is designed with the Alumni Association
member in mind. Significant discounts for members and varying numbers
of guests will be available on all offerings. Non-member alums can also
participate, but would pay higher fees.
“Our goal is to reward our loyal, dues-paying members and to encourage
non-members to become active with the association,” says Wilkinson.
