Medallion Scholars dinner welcomes new recipients to Sun Devil fold

The 20 winners of the new Arizona State University Alumni Association Medallion Award Scholarship Program were feted on April 10 with a dinner and award ceremony, which welcomed them to the fold of ASU scholars and started their relationship with the Alumni Association.

The event was highlighted by remarks from Alumni Association President Christine Wilkinson. Master of Ceremonies Tim Desch, the association’s executive director, guided dinner attendees through the event, and Thomas Dorn ’88 B.A., ’99 M.P.A., chair of the Medallion Scholarship Committee, narrated a history of the Medallion Awards, which have existed in one form or another since the 1960s. Alumni Association Board of Directors Chair Sandra Day ’65 B.A., ’73 M.P.A. and Vice Chairman Kenneth Behringer ’74 B.A., ’78 J.D., ’88 M.B.A. presented the medallions to the students.

The Medallion Scholars for the 2006-2007 school year are: Ashley Allen, Corona del Sol High School, Tempe; Jared Bartell, Chandler High School, Chandler; Jennifer Burdick, Pinnacle High School, Scottsdale; Elinorluz Campion, Ajo High School, Ajo; Ryan Chou, Pinnacle High School, Scottsdale; Tara D’Arcangelo, St. Mary’s High School, Phoenix; Lauren Kawam, Horizon Community Learning Center, Tempe; Aspen Knickrehm, Young Teaching High School, Young; Patricia Lepkowski, Mountain Ridge High School, Glendale; Lindsey McClintock, Ironwood Ridge High School, Oro Valley; Ashley Ortega, Mesa High School, Mesa; Amanda Rogers, Desert Vista High School, Phoenix; Kelsie Sharp, Chino Valley High School, Chino Valley; Katherine Stanley, Desert Mountain High School, Scottsdale; Megan Thomas, Corona del Sol High School, Tempe; Kevin Tudor, Horizon High School, Phoenix; Jenna Wagner, Arizona Lutheran Academy, Glendale; Jessica Walden, Corona del Sol High School, Tempe; Shi-Chiao Wang, Chandler High School, Chandler; and Tiyana White, Red Mountain High School, Mesa.

The Medallion Award Scholarship is the association’s signature scholarship initiative and provides four-year, renewable scholarships of $2,000 a year to students selected for the program. Students are required to participate in a mentorship program, contribute volunteer hours to the Alumni Association, and maintain a satisfactory grade point average and remain in good standing as an undergraduate. Eligibility for the program is limited to recipients of ASU’s University Scholarship program, which is awarded to Arizona high school students based on academic performance.
