Reports
from Sun Devils everywhere
Chapter and Club Leadership Conference
With its strong message about leadership
development and Sun Devil pride, this spring’s annual
conference for chapters and clubs drew more than 60 alumni
leaders from the Valley of the Sun and around the nation. ASU
alumni relations staff, the ASU Alumni Association team and
members of the Alumni Association board of directors were also
in attendance. The conference was held in Old Main on May 5
and 6, where the participants were among the first to see the
completely renovated front lawn.
Speakers at the conference included ASU President Michael Crow, Alumni
Association President Christine Wilkinson, and recently arrived men’s
basketball coach, Herb Sendek. In addition, attendees were treated to
a pre-game barbecue before a women’s softball game, which was attended
by Vice President for Athletics Lisa Love and Coach Clint Myers. ASU
alumna Brianne Wheeler, representing the Austin Alumni Club, threw out
the first pitch in the game where the Sun Devils easily defeated the
Stanford Cardinals.
The conference featured a number of presentations, workshops and roundtable
discussions about alumni traditions, the importance of membership, and
new directions in enhancing the alumni experience, along with spirited
networking and camaraderie among the chapter and club leaders.
American Humanics
In celebration of the American Humanics 2006
graduating class, 15 alumni gathered at Old Main for the AH Student
Association’s Recognition Dinner. Carson Ballroom served
as the venue for a celebration of the program’s final year
at the Tempe campus. The dinner also served as one of many celebrations
of the program’s move to ASU’s downtown campus over
the summer.
Before sitting down to a meal and entertaining program, the alumni joined
members of the graduating class and nonprofit management program staff
for a reception in the third floor foyer. The alumni were excited to
meet the up-and-coming students and new graduates, as well as to reconnect
with old friends, colleagues and mentors. After supporting a silent auction
to benefit the AH Student Association, the alumni were treated to a presentation
by Phyllis Wallace, vice president for nonprofit partnerships and campus
expansion with American Humanics Inc.
Robert Ashcraft was acknowledged by Wallace for his dedication to the
nonprofit profession and to the development of education for its future
leaders. Quite possibly the most poignant portion of the presentation
was the standing ovation he received from his past and present students
and colleagues.

Austin
The Austin club has been very active in 2006.
We started the year off with a day trip to Waco for a tailgate
party and visit from Coach Pat Murphy before the ASU-Baylor baseball
game. We had a little rain, lots of great barbecue, and a win
over the Bears. Two weeks later, we stayed in Austin to see the
Devils take on the Longhorns. In April, we had our annual spring
golf tournament, which was a success. Special thanks go to Christy
Southergill, the Alumni Association’s director of chapter
and club relations, for making the long trip from Tempe for our
tournament.
Earlier this summer, we had ASU night at the Round Rock Express (a minor
league affiliate of the Houston Astros) on June 3 and a June 17 event
at the Rangers-Diamondbacks game that we co-sponsored with the Dallas/Fort
Worth chapter. We’re planning our Sun Devil Send-Off in late July.
We will continue to have second Wednesday happy hours every month, and
we look forward to a great football season at our new viewing location,
Ringers.
For information about this alumni club, contact Travis Snell at (512)
970-3245 or Stoic.cactus@gmail.com.
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
On April 8, the College of Liberal Arts and
Sciences alumni chapter hosted its seventh annual International
Wine Festival. Thanks to all of our sponsors and guests, we had
a record-breaking year – and a lot of fun in the process.
More than 400 friends came out to support study-abroad and first-generation
scholarships, doubling the participation from last year. The
event raised money for three $1,000 scholarships this year, as
well as $2,500 for the Legacy Scholarship and $6,000 towards
endowing our scholarship for first-generation college students.
The event featured live music, wines and beer from around the world and
food provided by P.F. Chang’s, Caffe Boa of Ahwatukee, Grilled
Expedition, and Rustler’s Rooste. Guests also participated in a
silent auction with a variety of sought-after items, including sports
memorabilia, VIP tickets to the Dr. Phil show, and a painting of a Tuscan
landscape by Steve Stento.
Special thanks go to our title sponsors, Insight Enterprises and Quarles & Brady
Streich Lang LLC. For information on next year’s festival, contact
Linda Raish at (480) 965-0377.
For information about this chapter, contact Martha Carter at Martha.carter@asu.edu.
College of Nursing
Attention nursing graduates, our next board
meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 16. Call or e-mail us for
the location. We also plan to have a special Homecoming event
on Oct. 21, so watch your e-mail for details.
For information on this chapter, contact Nancy Tucker at (602) 242-3982
or nrtucker@msn.com.
College of Teacher Education and Leadership
The College of Teacher Education and Leadership
alumni board is working hard to strengthen and grow our chapter.
Our plan of action for 2006-07 will bring us a new chapter president,
Darna Davis. Darna has spent this past year serving as our chapter
secretary and will be a great president. Current President Kimberly
Allen will serve as co-president during the transition since
our college will also have a new dean.
We currently have vacancies on our board for a secretary and members-at-large.
All alumni who are paid Alumni Association members are eligible. Members-at-large
must be able to participate in all board meetings (four total) and a
minimum of one ASU event to stay on the board.
During the month of May, our chapter was involved in two events that
helped us congratulate new education graduates. We sponsored a Certification
Celebration that praised graduates who have reached this important professional
milestone, and chapter president Kimberly Allen spoke at the college’s
spring convocation, encouraging graduates to consider membership in the
chapter. Board members sold flowers at this event and also conducted
a membership drive.
For information about this chapter, contact Lauren D’Amico at (602)
543-6327 or Lauren.Damico@asu.edu.
Colorado
The summer is only in mid-sizzle, but you can
plan your fall calendar with the Colorado chapter right now.
On Sept. 15, we’re planning a pep rally before the ASU-Colorado
game, at a location in downtown Denver. Come out and socialize with fellow
Sun Devils the night prior to the big game. On Sept. 16, join us for
the big game in Boulder. We will have a pre-game tailgate on the CU campus.
Whether you are a local alum or are flying in for the game, we would
love to have you there. Time and location will be announced closer to
the game date. Visit ASUColorado.com for details.
This fall, we plan to host watching parties at The Sports Column, a Sun
Devil-owned establishment, in lower downtown Denver. Our Web site will
have a list of televised ASU games that we’ll be watching there.
For information about this chapter, contact Derek Peterson at (303) 386-3079
or ASUDerek@gmail.com.
Communication Studies
The Communication Studies alumni chapter is
committed to building connections among alumni, faculty, and
current and future students of Arizona State University at the
West campus.
In March board members agreed unanimously to assist our department in
meeting the Fulton Challenge. Our contribution came from fundraising
events completed during our first year of chapterhood. College of Human
Services Dean John Hepburn thanked us for the effort, noting, “These
funds will allow us to expand and enrich the educational experiences
of undergraduates.”
In April, our chapter launched its Web site, http://www.west.asu.edu/csac.
The site is a treasure-trove of valuable chapter-related information.
Visit it regularly for updated news, events, and career resources.
Mark your calendar now for Wednesday, Nov. 1, when we will hold the chapter’s
third annual “Connections… past, present, and future” event
at the West campus. This is our signature event, and we’d like
everyone to attend.
For information about this chapter, contact Carol Marshall at (602) 788-6553
or csmarshall@asualumni.org.
Criminal Justice and Criminology
The Criminal Justice and Criminology alumni
chapter hosted an evening enrichment event April 5 at the West
campus. The featured speaker was Dan Schatz, current Prescott
Valley police chief and former Los Angeles Police Department
commander.
Schatz delivered a powerful message on police ethics as he discussed
what went wrong in the Rampart division of the LAPD. During a years-long
investigation, police misconduct including stolen drug evidence, shooting
cover-ups and thefts were discovered. The evening concluded with dialogue
on how police departments can build trust and responsibility and provide
the best possible customer service to the communities they serve.
We had more than 180 community and alumni attendees at this event, and
we hope to have more educational events like this in the future. For
information about this chapter, contact Angela Marnell at ammarnell@aol.com.
Dallas/Fort Worth
On April 2, a group of enthusiastic and committed
Dallas/Fort Worth area alumni met with chapter and club relations
staff from the Alumni Association, as well as a representative
from the Austin alumni club. Our goal was to find ways to breathe
new life and excitement into our chapter. Several strategies
and potential activities were discussed, as well as more collaborative
programming among the three Texas Sun Devil alumni groups.
One of the first collaborative events was a great ASU night at Texas
Rangers baseball on June 17, when the Rangers took on the Diamondbacks.
A short e-mail survey was also sent to area alumni this spring.
Are you interested in becoming involved in rebuilding the chapter? The
steering committee would love to have more participants. For information
about becoming involved, e-mail alumni@asu.edu,
and make the subject line “Chapter and Club Relations.”
Del E. Webb School of Construction
Our monthly meetings are the last Wednesday
of each month. Please join us if you’d like to become more
involved in our chapter.
We have a golf tournament scheduled for Oct. 20 at Karsten Golf Course
in Tempe. Mark your calendar now to join us for this Homecoming week
event!
For information about this chapter, contact Bob Glenn at (602) 973-9684
or bobbuilder@msn.com.
Department of Social Work
We’re pleased to announce the board officers
for the Department of Social Work at the West campus alumni chapter:
Dottie Anderson, president; Steve Lazere, vice president; Frances
Marable, secretary; Alice Johnson, treasurer.
Please let us know if you would like to attend a meeting by e-mailing
us at andadot@aol.com. We’d
be happy to send you information on meeting locations and times.
For information about this chapter, contact Dottie Anderson at (602)
543-6602 or andadot@aol.com.
Herberger College of Fine Arts
Nearly 90 Herberger College alumni filled the
set of the Disney Channel’s new show “Hannah Montana” on
March 12 in Los Angeles. The event was a celebration of the new
film and media production concentration offered by the Herberger
College School of Theater and Film, formerly the Department of
Theater.
Los Angeles chapter president Eddie DeVall assisted in setting up the
hosting for the event at Tribune Studios, with help from fellow alum
George NeJame. Participants received a private studio tour and learned
more about the ASU program, which teaches students the artistic skills
of theatrical performance and storytelling, while focusing on state-of-the-art
filmmaking skills and the importance of ethics in entertainment.
For information about this chapter, contact Deanna Stulgaitis at Deanna.Stulgaitis@asu.edu.
Houston
Join fellow ASU alumni in the Greater Houston
area for our summer happy hours. On the second Wednesday of the
month, from May through August, we meet at the Market Square
Bar and Grill, located at 311 Travis. The establishment is owned
and operated by a fellow ASU alum, so come and enjoy the company
of other Sun Devils.
Football season is just around the corner, and we’ll be resuming
our game watching get-togethers come fall. Check your e-mail for times,
dates and locations.
For information about this chapter, or to be added to the chapter e-mail
list, contact Lisa Spence at (281) 792-5859 or elizabeth.a.spence@nasa.gov.
Interdisciplinary Studies
The Interdisciplinary Studies alumni chapter
is alive and well. We are gaining momentum after a leadership
transition; if you would like to get involved with planning,
volunteering, or leading, please contact us. We are planning
some functions, including tailgating at home football games at
Sparky’s Touchdown Tailgate, for this fall. We can always
use some help.
Student enrollment in the interdisciplinary degree program has grown
rapidly. Now that the Interdisciplinary Studies alumni group is part
of the University College family, let’s not forget that we as the
alumni are there to volunteer our support for the students who will continue
to build on the Interdisciplinary Studies tradition.
Our thanks to all who volunteered at the spring convocation, and congratulations
to our new program graduates.

or isac@cox.net.
Viva Las Vegas… Sun Devils, that is!
On May 23, more than 50 Las Vegas alumni gathered
on Tropicana Avenue to kick off the city’s new ASU alumni
chapter – and what a beginning it was.
The “Evening Under the Stars” dessert reception, hosted by
Southwest Gas at their Outdoor Living Demonstration Center, featured
Christine Wilkinson, president of the ASU Alumni Association, who brought
greetings from ASU President Michael Crow, as well as news about the
transformation of the university and the exciting directions of the alumni
association. Many thanks to alumnus Jim Kane, president of Southwest
Gas, who hosted the reception, and Dustin Watters, who spoke to attendees
about the recent Las Vegas Devils golf tournament and the chapter’s
hopes to involve more area alums next year.
Are you interested in building a strong alumni presence in Las Vegas?
Contact the ASU Alumni Association office of Chapter and Club Relations
at alumniweb@asu.edu or call 1-800-ALUMNUS
about being part of the new Las Vegas chapter. Do it today. Let’s
bring some Sun Devil brilliance to the City of Lights.
Leadership Scholarship Program
The LSP Alumni Chapter hosted its first-ever
alumni family picnic on April 1 at Papago Park. Approximately
30 alums and their families enjoyed a beautiful spring afternoon.
Members of the chapter board attended the LSP Senior Banquet on April
18 at the Memorial Union on the Tempe campus. The chapter presented the
Dr. Christine K. Wilkinson Leadership Scholarship to junior Ermila Valentin,
who dedicates her time to helping young children succeed in school.
On April 27, the chapter hosted its third annual wine-tasting event on
the patio at My Wine Cellar in Ahwatukee. Approximately 40 alumni and
current LSP seniors enjoyed a rare cool night while learning about a
variety of red and white wines and noshing on appetizers paired to compliment
the wine selections.
Looking ahead, this fall, the chapter will again host the LSP Student
Meeting on Oct. 3 at the Memorial Union. It’s a great opportunity
to discuss your profession and career choices with the current LSP students.
Later in that month, the chapter will host a Homecoming reception for
alumni on Friday, Oct. 20 at the Tempe Mission Palms hotel. Join us that
evening and return to the Tempe campus on Saturday, Oct. 21 to take part
in the Homecoming Block Party and all the other great Homecoming festivities.
For information about this chapter, contact Jonell L. Lucca at (480)
699-0377 or jonelllucca@yahoo.com.
Los Angeles
It’s been a busy spring connecting the
Sun Devil nation in Los Angeles with
a variety of events, including a pre-game event before the ASU-UCLA baseball
game, our third annual wine tasting event, and supporting the fifth annual
Cal Devils Golf Tournament, which benefited ASU athletics.
Later this year, stay tuned for upcoming events including ASU Alumni
Day at Dodger Stadium, a young alumni social and networking event and
our long-overdue “LA Stories – Alumni in Entertainment” career
panel.
Speaking of alumni in entertainment, let us know if you’re working
in the entertainment industry. Alumni can play a big role in the success
of the new film programs in addition to alumni networking opportunities.
The 2006 Sun Devil football season wouldn’t be complete without
Sparky’s Touchdown Tailgate Party prior to the ASU-USC football
game on Oct. 14 at the LA Coliseum. We’re likely to host a Friday
night event, so check our Web site for event information.
Your membership in the chapter is what makes us great. Check our Web
site out for more information on our Los Angeles Alumni Membership Challenge.
For information on this chapter, contact Eddie DeVall at edevall@asualumni.org or
(323) 653-4578. The chapter Web site is www.lasundevils.com.
West campus MBA
The MBA chapter at the West campus has gotten
off to a good year. We opened the lines of communication with
MBA alumni through a quarterly newsletter. In September, we held
our first MBA alumni reunion, a fun-filled evening that included
more than 55 alumni and current faculty in attendance.
This spring, we participated in a career fest that connected local companies
with experienced MBA graduates. The event provided a forum not only to
connect with the local community, but served as a networking event for
current graduate students and MBA alumni. A second alumni reunion is
in the planning stages for September. Faculty, current graduate students,
and MBA alumni will be invited to a picnic with the objective of recruiting
new board prospects and maintaining connections and effective communication
with the campus, faculty and alumni.
We want to thank Mohan Gopalakrishnan and his staff for all the support
they have provided the chapter this year.
If you would like information about this chapter, contact Manuel Mireles
at manuel.mireles.jr@cox.net.
National Capital (Washington, D.C.)
The National Capital Chapter is gearing up for
another season of softball on the National Mall. We’re
always on the lookout for new talent, so any D.C.-area Sun Devils
interested in competing against alumni groups from a host of
other schools are encouraged to come out and play.
We will also be welcoming ASU’s Capitol Scholars, an annual program
that brings ASU students to the nation’s capital for internships
in government and political organizations. Among the activities we have
planned with the scholars are the annual alumni-intern softball game/barbeque,
a group outing to a Nationals game, and the Capitol Hill Report panel
discussion.
For information about this chapter, e-mail Matt Enderle at matt.enderle@
gmail.com, or visit the chapter’s Web site, www.dcsundevils.org.
New England
The New England chapter continues to keep local
alumni connected to their alma mater. Highlights of the spring
included a happy hour reception at the Museum of Fine Arts in
Boston, and the second annual Pac-10 Alumni Golf Outing at Brookline
Golf Club. The chapter also welcomed Lara Ellis, a 1995 graduate
and a proud lifetime member of the alumni association, as a new
board member.
Along with summer comes an exciting schedule of chapter events. The always-popular
Pac-10 Alumni Day at the Beach returns to Carson Beach in South Boston
in July, as Sun Devils join other Pac-10 alumni clubs for a fun-filled
day of sun, surf, and some spirited beach volleyball action. August brings
another installment of the rotating Pac-10 Alumni Happy Hour series,
and the legendary Pac-10 Alumni Pub Crawl returns to Faneuil Hall in
September. And of course, the chapter will be gathering this fall to
cheer the ASU football team on its way to bowl game glory.
For information about the chapter or to subscribe to the e-mail update
list, contact Jeffrey Olen at (617) 784-4971 or jeffreyolen@asualumni.org.
The chapter Web site is http://www.asu.edu/
alumni/groups/newengland.html.
Northern California
The last weekend of April was a historic one
for the NorCal chapter as we partnered with some of our alums
in San Francisco to host Spring Tempe-tation III, which had more
than 300 in attendance. Many thanks to Sean Pate and John Curran
for their efforts with the party.
That same weekend, the Pat Tillman Foundation held Pat’s Run in
San Jose. There were more than 3,000 participants in the race, and the
chapter assisted with co-marketing this event.
Please visit our Web site, norcalsundevils.com, or our My Space group
at www.groups.myspace.com/ asunorcal for upcoming events and football
viewing party information for both the South Bay (Los Gatos) and San
Francisco. We are also planning Sparky’s Touchdown Tailgate before
the ASU football game against the University of California, Berkeley,
on Sept. 23. Stay tuned to the Web site for details.
For information about this chapter, contact James Roosevelt at (408)
612-6864 or jamesroosevelt@asualumni.edu.
Old Pueblo (Tucson)
The Old Pueblo chapter has a long list of events
scheduled for the next year, including a trip to the Flandreau
Planetarium in August, football-watching parties for ASU’s
away games this season, a Sabino Canyon Twilight ride Oct. 7,
hosting the Nov. 25 ASU vs. U of A Sparky’s Touchdown Tailgate,
a trip to the Tucson Botanical Gardens and a progressive dinner
and wine-tasting event in November. Come join us and meet your
Tucson allies.
For information on this chapter, contact Andy Contreras at (520) 749-1662
or andycontreras@comcast.net.
Greater Philadelphia
The Greater Philadelphia region will soon be
an official chapter, and is already looking for all ASU alumni
in the area to join them. We have had several great events in
just our first couple of months; we think this chapter has the
makings of something special.
With two former Sparkys living right here in Philadelphia, we are truly
loaded with the Sun Devil spirit. There is so much we are planning for
this group — don’t miss out on the athletic, cultural and
social activities as we continue to network and develop the visibility
of ASU in this region.
Throughout the year we will be involved in student recruitment and orientation.
Mentoring recent ASU graduates and celebrating the journeys of new ASU
students with a warm send-off are just a few of the activities being
planned.
For information on this chapter, contact Patrick Janovsky at (215) 327-4741
or phillydevil24@ yahoo.com.
Real Estate
The Real Estate alumni club has met twice, once
in November at Karsten Golf Course Clubhouse and once in April
at the offices of the Pollack Investment company. Our mission
is to provide a forum in which graduates of the real estate program
at Arizona State University and those working in the real estate
industry can network and interact for business, social, educational,
and employment opportunities, and can provide continued support
of the academic program through internships, scholarships and
mentoring.
Our next meeting will be sometime this fall; be sure to e-mail your name
and contact information to Jay Butler at jay.butler@asu.edu to
learn about future events, employment opportunities and what your fellow
graduates are doing.
For information on this club, call Jay Butler at (480) 727-1300.
Recreation and Tourism Management
We are proud to announce the recent formation
of the Recreation and Tourism Management alumni chapter at ASU’s
West campus. The purpose of this chapter is to encourage interaction,
promote involvement, and encourage current students to continue
in this fun and rewarding field.
We plan to offer several opportunities each year for current students
and our alumni to interact and meet one another. The first of these opportunities
took place May 3, at the RTM Connections Alumni and Senior Banquet at
West campus. Approximately 100 current students, faculty members, alumni
and guests attended and everyone had the opportunity to reconnect with
old friends and make some new ones, all at the same time. We are looking
forward to many great years of service to our alumni and to the program.
For information on future activities, contact us at rtmalumnichapterwest@earthlink.net.
San Diego
Highlights from San Diego alumni chapter activities
for this spring included hosting an alumni tent at the San Diego
Crew Classic on Mission Bay, where we welcomed and cheered for
the ASU Crew team. We also enjoyed a great day recently with
our Sun Devil friends tasting wine in the beautiful Temecula
Valley.
The San Diego Sun Devils invite all area alumni to our upcoming summer
lineup of events, including our Summer Beach Party on July 15 and Day
at The Races in Del Mar later this summer.
Even though it’s summer right now, Sun Devil football is just around
the corner. Join us at our gathering spot, The Local in downtown San
Diego, for all televised games. Check out our Web site at www.sdsundevils.com
for all of the latest information.
Alumni are also invited to our monthly board meetings on the first Tuesday
of the month. E-mail us for meeting location and time.
For information on this chapter, contact Andy Hanshaw at (619) 977-2989
or sandiegochapter@asualumni.org.
School of Community Resources and Development
School of Community Resources and Development
alumni chapter board officers for next year are: Karolyn Kiburz,
president; Georgette McNally, vice president; Karin Valentine,
secretary; and David Landau, treasurer. The board welcomes Melanie
Armstrong, Michael Darnall, Kevin Naugton, Molly Nock, Yvette
Ponte, Diane Ransford, Melissa Schubert, Melanie Slate and Shawn
Wagner as at-large board members. We know they’ll continue
our mission and cultivate a fun, active chapter membership.
The board just helped update the alumni pages on the school’s Web
site and encourage any recreation, tourism or therapeutic recreation
alumni to visit and provide feedback. Visit scrd.asu.edu/ alumni.shtml
and tell us what you think.
Our next major event during the school year will be the Alumni Hall of
Fame luncheon, slated for Oct. 19 at the Wyndham Hotel in Phoenix.
For information about this chapter, contact Karolyn Kiburz at (480) 990-1887
or karolyn@mcsource.net.
School of Global Management and Leadership
We invite the School of Global Management and
Leadership’s alumni to get involved with our chapter at
many levels. We are looking for people to provide student support,
alumni support, and board member development. Chapter involvement
is a wonderful way to give back to ASU: many graduates are looking
for guidance and “real world” support after graduation;
other alumni are looking for personal and professional development
and some are looking to reconnect to their friends and the school.
We need dynamic and diverse alumni to support our own.
The alumni chapter board members are engaging different businesses for
personal and business development events. We schedule guest speakers
on a wide variety of topics, and we strive to educate current students.
Our last event was at The Keg Steakhouse at Desert Ridge Marketplace
on April 27 to promote board development. There was free food and drinks
with door prizes given out during the evening. The event was fun and
successful, and a few new board prospects were identified. Our board
and committee members meet every third Tuesday of the month at the West
campus. Contact us at sgmlalumni@yahoo.com if you would like further
information on board activities. We look forward to welcoming you at
our next activity.
For information about this chapter, contact Joy Butler at (602) 740-5661
or sgmlalumni@yahoo.com.
School of Public Affairs
This spring, more than 80 alumni, students and
faculty attended the annual alumni lecture, “A Public Life:
Politics and Ethics,” featuring James Keene, executive
director of California State Association of Counties. Alumni
were also invited to attend “The Sun Corridor: Arizona’s
Emerging Megapolitan Area,” in May, which included presentations
by students who have been making projections out to 2040 regarding
demographic changes, economic development, environmental, general
capacity and resilience issues for the region.
This year the chapter made important contacts with Pi Alpha Alpha, the
Students of Public Administration Network, the National Forum for Black
Public Administrators, and the International Hispanic Network. We remain
committed to offering forums for public discourse, social interactions
and service for our alumni and support for our school.
Jayson Matthews is the incoming chapter president for 2006-2007. We will
be honoring one of our prominent alumni during Homecoming Week, so we
hope you can join us at the annual Alumni Hall of Fame luncheon on Oct.
19. Visit http://copp.asu.edu for details
as they become available.
For information about this chapter, contact Alana Chavez at (602) 495-5441
or alana.chavez@phoenix.gov.
School of Social Work
The chapter attracted a record 60 alumni to
its spring workshop on trauma recovery, which was followed by
a reception with the new director of the School, Mary Gillmore,
at the ASU downtown Phoenix campus. We were pleased that ten
alumni purchased new Alumni Association memberships that evening
to help support future chapter events.
Alumni also came out in strong support of the School of Social Work’s
Job and Internship Fair, and we are grateful to the more than 200 alumni
who provide field placements for social work students in Phoenix, Tucson
and surrounding regions. This is alumni engagement at its best.
School of Social Work alumni chapter board officers for next year are
Kim Villarreal, president; Lisa Garcia, vice president; Lilly Perez-Freerks,
secretary; and Dominique Roe-Sepowitz, treasurer. The board is planning
a book signing and reception with Professor Barbara Robles, who co-wrote “The
Color of Wealth,” (The New Press, June 2006.)
If you live in the Phoenix area or if you are visiting for Homecoming,
mark your calendar for the annual Alumni Hall of Fame luncheon on Oct.
19. Visit http://copp.asu.edu for details
as they become available.
For information about this chapter, contact Kim Villarreal at (480) 965-3769
or Kim.Villarreal@asu.edu.
Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass
Communications
Hot dogs, hamburgers and iced tea were enjoyed
by everyone who attended the first annual “Cronkite Cookout,” held
on April 8 at the Starlight Terrace on ASU’s Tempe Campus.
The inaugural event was the chapter’s first big activity
and welcomed alumni, faculty and staff and current students from
the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
The event was co-sponsored by the Arizona Republic, Channel 3, and the
New Times. Chapter President Manny Romero introduced Christine Wilkinson,
president of the ASU Alumni Association, who was on-hand to meet and
greet alumni and other guests during the event.
The Cronkite School is rooted in excellence, integrity and innovation — the
hallmark values of its legendary namesake, CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite.
Throughout the school’s evolution, Cronkite alums have carved out
high-profile and respectable careers in all areas of the media.
The Cronkite chapter seeks more participation from its alumni as it moves
into the next academic year. The chapter’s future activities will
include meetings, picnics and other networking opportunities for its
members, faculty and staff and future graduates of the Cronkite School.
For information about this chapter, contact Manny Romero at (480) 235-3366
or Mannylr71@yahoo.com.
