Arizona State University isbeing rapidly
and dramatically transformed. Change is evident in new facilities,
collaborative private-public and intergovernmental undertakings,
and innovation that permeates processes from how we teach and learn
to how we convert knowledge into action.
Your Alumni association has transformed at the same time. it has been my
pleasure to provide direction to this dynamic organization for the past
year as chair. We have made much progress by concentrating our efforts
around three themes. Honoring Traditions, Enhancing the Alumni Experience
and Advancing the Future.
I am perhaps most proud of the fact that we reconstituted our principal
scholarship program this past year. Today, there are 20 outstanding high
school graduates preparing to enter ASU in the fall, where they will become
the inaugural class of Medallion Award Scholars. Each has committed to
perform service hours in support of association events and programs. Active
alumni have committed as well to mentor and participate with these students
in volunteer involvement. |

These scholars join
ASU at a historic point in our alma mater's history. With pressures
of continued population growth. ASU anticipated and accommodated
a doubling of freshmen enrollment from 1995 to 2005. Yet 2005 freshmen
were even more academically qualified and representative of our
diverse population. Though tuition has escalated, student debt
has been largely contained by effective financial assistance. We
should all take pride in such outstanding achievement.
No single factor or individual propels a university to greatness. Advancement
comes through consistent and cumulative efforts of those who understand
and support the mission. We can each add to the vigor, strength, and development
of our university, and we help build that which we value through sharing
our time, talent and treasure. Efforts and accomplishments of our students,
faculty, staff and alumni are many, varied, worthy and substantial. thanks
for supporting association staff and volunteers in efforts to build and
serve our university community. We value your voice, ideas, and assistance.
