To protect the confidentiality of students receiving services at ASU counseling centers

ASU counseling centers protect the confidentiality of students in all aspects of service, including communications with students, management of student files and student information, and case consultation, except where written permission to release information has been obtained or when a release of information is specifically required by law (e.g., if a student threatens to injure himself or herself or someone else, reveals information regarding the observed abuse, neglect, or exploitation of minors or vulnerable adults, or reveals information regarding the abuse, neglect, or exploitation of an incapacitated adult).

At the beginning of counseling, all prospective students are informed of ASU policies regarding confidentiality. At that time, in order to receive services, students are required to sign a statement indicating their understanding of the conditions under which confidentiality is not protected.

As part of their orientation to working at ASU, all new professional staff members, trainees, support staff, and student workers are informed of the policies and procedures related to student confidentiality.

All procedures for the protection of confidentiality of students who are 17 or younger are the same as those for students who are 18 or older, with the exception that clinical information and records for students 17 or younger may be disclosed to the students’ parents or legal guardians.
