USI 304–11: Student Employee Termination

Policy

[horizontal rule]

A department or unit that has a student employee with performance deficiencies will counsel the student, in an attempt to change the behavior or performance. If necessary, written reprimand should follow verbal reprimand.

If deficient performance continues, the student may be terminated. Subject to the exception below, the student may or may not be given two weeks’ notice of dismissal. The student may appeal the action within two working days to the hiring official, who will render a final written decision within seven days after receipt of the appeal.

When it is in the best interest of the department or the university, the student employee may be suspended or terminated immediately. The student employee may appeal such an action within 48 hours or within the next two working days. See USI 304–12, “Student Employee Grievances.”

Procedure

[horizontal rule]
  1. The supervisor discusses the problem with the student employee, confirming that the student employee understands the job performance expectations or the expected behavior.
  2. If the problem is not resolved after this discussion, the employer gives the student a written warning that:
    1. states the problem
    2. states the remedy
    3. assigns a time frame for when the remedy must be achieved
    4. is dated

      and

    5. has both the employer’s and employee’s signatures.
  3. If the student’s performance continues to be unsatisfactory and the student has not remedied the situation in the time frame indicated on the written warning, the employer may terminate the student.
