SSM 701–10: On-Campus Transportation for Individuals with Disabilities—Tempe Campus
To provide on-campus cart transportation for individuals, including students, staff, faculty, and visitors, who are physically unable to walk to campus locations
The Rehabilitation Act of 1973, 29 United States Code §§ 701–796
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (1990, 2008), 42 United States Code § 12101 et seq.
Disability Resource Center
The Disability Resource Center (DRC) provides rides to and from parking, public transit stops, classrooms, residence halls, and other campus buildings for qualified individuals with disabilities. However, these individuals should seek alternate transportation whenever possible.
Individuals who are unable to walk to Tempe campus locations must register with the DRC and provide the required medical documentation to be eligible for on-campus cart transportation service.
A form to be used for this purpose will be provided by the DRC upon registration for transportation services. The form must be completed by the individual’s attending physician with a clearly indicated number of weeks or a termination date for on-campus transportation, and be returned to DRC Transportation Services by fax, mail, or hand delivery within three business days from the first day this service is scheduled to begin. Passengers failing to return the completed form by the deadline indicated on the form will have services canceled. Services will be reinstated upon receipt of the completed form.
This is a shared ride, prescheduled transportation service for qualified individuals. Rides are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. All rides requested are subject to availability of vehicles and drivers. If an individual will not need a scheduled ride, he or she must notify the DRC prior to the scheduled ride. Failure to notify the DRC twice results in cancellation of transportation services.
DRC golf carts are not equipped to transport manual wheelchairs. DRC carts are only capable of transporting certain ambulatory aids such as crutches, canes, collapsible walkers, and collapsible tri-wheel manual scooters. Individuals using such equipment are responsible for securing their equipment while being transported. The equipment cannot extend beyond the physical exterior of the vehicle at any time. All equipment transport requests are subject to prior approval by the program supervisor.
The DRC on-campus transportation cannot provide individuals with personal assistance with boarding and exiting the cart; thus passengers must be able to perform this function independently. Nor are personal trips such as trips to a bank or store permitted.
See the DRC Web site for detailed information and procedures for accessing services and accommodations available for qualified students at specific ASU campuses and sites.
