SSM 204–02: Master’s and Doctoral Programs of Study

To establish a program of study for graduate students relating to the specific degree requirements for graduate degree completion and graduation

Graduate students working toward a master’s or doctoral degree must file an official Master’s Degree Program of Study form or a Doctoral Program of Study form, as appropriate, at the earliest possible date after admission with regular status to a specific graduate degree program.

Courses and requirements on the program of study are subject to approval by the graduate student’s supervisory committee, department chair, and the Graduate College.

The graduate student must file a Petition to the Graduate College if any changes to the program are necessary.

Filing a Master’s or Doctoral Program of Study


Responsibility

Graduate student
  1. Complete and submit to the department the master’s or doctoral Interactive Program of Study (iPOS) online at My ASU.
  1. If assistance is needed, talk with the committee chair, committee members, or graduate coordinator.
  2. Make any necessary revisions and resubmit if necessary.
Academic Department
  1. Verify that the iPOS meets the specified requirements and submit it to the Graduation Section at the Tempe campus or, if the student is registered at the West campus, Registration Services at the West campus.
  2. Help students complete any necessary revisions, online course changes, or petitions.
Graduation Section or Registration Services at the West campus
  1. Verify that the iPOS meets the requirements specified in the ASU Graduate Catalog.
  2. Reroute the iPOS to the department for revisions when necessary.
  3. Submit the student’s iPOS to the Graduate College once it has been verified.
  4. Process online petitions or course changes for the student when needed.
Graduate College
  1. Approve or disapprove the program.
  2. Return the approved iPOS for processing to the Graduation Section at the Tempe campus or, if the student is registered at the West campus, Registration Services at the West campus.
  3. Notify student by e-mail when iPOS is approved.


Filing a Petition to the Graduate College

  1. Use online format to file course changes and petitions to the Graduate College, and submit them to the department for approval.
  1. If assistance is needed, check with the committee chair, committee members, or graduate coordinator.
Department

Course change petitions:

  1. Verify that the petition meets graduation requirements, and then electronically forward to the Graduation Section at the Tempe campus or Enrollment Services at the West campus.

All other petitions:

  1. Verify that requirements are being met, and then electronically forward to the Graduate College.
For course change petitions only:
Graduation Section at the Tempe campus or Enrollment Services at the West campus (if the student is registered at the West campus)
  1. Verify that the petition adjusts the iPOS to meet the requirements specified in the ASU Graduate Catalog.
  2. Notify the student via e-mail of approval.
  3. Return to department if not approved.
For all non-course change petitions:
Graduation Section or Registration Services at the West campus
  1. Review and approve petition.
  2. Notify student via e-mail of approval.
  3. Return to department or hold for further information if not approved.
