SSM 201–13: Petition to Take a Course for the Third Time

Purpose

To allow students to petition to take an undergraduate course for the third time when a grade of “D” or “E” has been received twice for the same course

Policy

[horizontal rule]

An undergraduate course taken at ASU in which a grade of “D” or “E” has been received twice may be repeated again only after both the following criteria have been met:

  1. the student has submitted a petition to take a course for the third time to the standards committee of the college in which the student is enrolled

    and

  2. the petition has been approved by the college standards committee, or the University Standards Committee, if denied by the college.

  1. Complete and submit a petition to take a course for the third time to the standards committee of the college in which the student is enrolled.
College standards committee
  1. Review the petition and approve or deny it. Forward the petition to the Graduation Section of the University Registrar’s Office or Registration Services at the West, Polytechnic, or Downtown Phoenix campus.
If the petition is approved by the college standards committee:
  1. Note on the petition whether approval is for the present or a future semester.
Graduation Section or Registration Services at the West, Polytechnic, or Downtown Phoenix campus
  1. Post the following note on the Person Comment Entry page in OASIS “[Course prefix and number] APPRVD 3X date [date].”
If the petition is denied by the college standards committee:
College Standards Committee
  1. Forward the petition to the University Registrar’s Office Graduation Section.
Graduation Committee
  1. Prepare and forward the petition to the University Standards Committee.
University Standards Committee
  1. Approve or deny the petition and forward it to the Graduation Section or Registration Services at the West, Polytechnic, or Downtown Phoenix campus.
  2. Send to the student a copy of the results of the petition(s). Instruct the student to contact his or her college.
If the petition is approved:

  1. Contact the Graduation Section at 480/965–3256, Registration Services at the West campus at 602/543–8203, Registration Services at the Polytechnic campus at 480/727–3278, or Enrollment Services at the Downtown Phoenix campus at 602/496–0372.
Graduation Section or Registration Services at the West, Polytechnic, or Downtown Phoenix campus
  1. Post approval to the Person Comment Entry page in OASIS and direct the student to any registrar site (the Records Information counter at the Tempe campus or Registration Services at the West, Polytechnic, or Downtown Phoenix campus) to register for (or add) the course.

  1. Check the Person Comment Entry page in OASIS to verify that the petition was approved.
If the petition is approved before the drop/add deadline for the semester:
  1. Register or add the student back into the course that has been approved for retake.
If the petition is approved after the drop/add deadline and before the transaction deadline for the semester:
Student
  1. Submit either an Initial Registration Request form approved by the dean of the student’s college or a Drop/Add Request form approved by the dean of the college offering the course.
Records Information Section or Registration Services at the West, Polytechnic, or Downtown Phoenix campus
  1. Register or add the course that has been approved to be retaken.
If the petition is approved after the transaction deadline for the semester:

  1. Submit an approved Academic Record Change in order to register or add the course that has been approved to be retaken.

  1. Post the completed course to the student’s transcript.
