Classified Employees

The appropriate dean or director, in consultation with the director of Human Resources (HR) or designee, may place a classified employee on an administrative leave of absence with pay.

A classified employee may be placed on administrative leave with pay if the director of HR or designee determines

  1. that the continued presence of the employee on campus may constitute a substantial interference with the orderly functioning of the university, or of an area, unit, college, or department

    or

  2. that there is a need to initiate and complete an investigation regarding actions by the employee that may lead to progressive discipline steps

    or

  3. that actions have been directed toward the employee by another person that affect or potentially affect the employee’s well-being and that require resolution.

The administrator is to notify orally the appropriate vice president or designee of the proposed action before the effective date. However, if the action must be taken before notification for reasons such as, but not limited to, safety or potential liability, the administrator must notify the vice president as soon as possible after taking action.

Service Professional or Administrative Employees

The president or designee may place a service professional or administrative employee on administrative leave with pay if it is determined

  1. that the continued presence of the employee on campus may constitute a substantial interference with the orderly functioning of the university, or of an area, unit, college, or department

    or

  2. that there is a need to initiate and complete an investigation regarding actions by the employee that may lead to discipline (during the appointment period)

    or

  3. that actions have been directed toward the employee by another person that affect or potentially affect the employee’s well-being and that require resolution.

The president of the university or designee is to be notified orally of the action before the effective date of leave with pay. If action must be taken before notification, the president or designee should be notified as soon as possible thereafter.
