Academic Eligibility Requirements

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Pacific-12 Conference (Pac-12), and ASU each have specific criteria that a student-athlete must meet in order to be eligible for practice and competition during each year. It is critical that student-athletes understand these guidelines and work closely with their academic coaches to ensure compliance with them.

Full-Time Enrollment

Student-athletes must be enrolled full-time (at least 12 semester hours) each semester to be eligible for practice and competition.

Exceptions are:

  1. student-athletes who are in their last term to graduate may be enrolled in less than 12 hours if they are enrolled in all required remaining courses to graduate

    or

  2. student-athletes who have an approved NCAA progress toward degree waiver on file for an educational impacting disability (9 hours).

Eligibility During First Year (and Entering Third Semester):

  • remain full-time enrolled at all times
  • pass a minimum of 6 credits in the fall semester, 6 credits in the spring semester, and a combined 18 credits during academic year (fall and spring)
Note: Football only: pass a minimum of 9 credits in the fall semester, 6 credits in the spring semester, and a combined 18 credits during previous academic year (fall and spring)
  • complete 24 credits that count toward any degree (including summer)

    and

  • maintain a minimum 1.80 grade point average (GPA) entering third semester at ASU.

Eligibility During Second Year (and Entering Fifth Semester):

  • remain full-time enrolled at all times
  • pass a minimum of 6 credits in the fall semester, 6 credits in the spring semester, and a combined 18 credits during academic year (fall and spring)
Note: Football only: pass a minimum of 9 credits in the fall semester, 6 credits in the spring semester, and a combined 18 credits during previous academic year (fall and spring)
  • maintain a minimum 1.90 GPA entering fifth semester at ASU

    and

  • declare a major prior to the start of fifth semester and have completed at least 40% of degree.

Eligibility During Third Year (and Entering Seventh Semester):

  • remain full-time enrolled at all times
  • pass a minimum of 6 credits in the fall semester, 6 credits in the spring semester, and a combined 18 credits during academic year (fall and spring)
Note: Football only: pass a minimum of 9 credits in the fall semester, 6 credits in the spring semester, and a combined 18 credits during previous academic year (fall and spring)
  • maintain a minimum 2.00 GPA entering seventh semester at ASU

    and

  • must have completed at least 60% of degree.

Eligibility During Fourth Year (and Entering Ninth Semester):

  • remain full-time enrolled at all times
  • pass a minimum of 6 credits in the fall semester, 6 credits in the spring semester, and a combined 18 credits during academic year (fall and spring)
Note: Football only: pass a minimum of 9 credits in the fall semester, 6 credits in the spring semester, and a combined 18 credits during previous academic year (fall and spring)
  • maintain a minimum 2.00 GPA

    and

  • must have completed at least 80% of degree.
The following chart summarizes the GPA and degree-progress requirements:D
GPA and Degree-Progress Requirements
GPA Degree Progress
Entering 3rd semester (2nd year) 1.80 cumulative GPA
Entering 5th semester (3rd year) 1.90 cumulative GPA 40% of degree completed
Entering 7th semester (4th year) 2.00 cumulative GPA 60% of degree completed
Entering 9th semester (5th year) 2.00 cumulative GPA 80% of degree completed

The 1.60 GPA Requirement for Scholarship Student-Athletes

  1. Entering scholarship freshmen student-athletes must achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 1.60 (based on hours earned at ASU) during their first year of enrollment at ASU in order to be eligible for practice at the beginning of the next academic year.
  2. Entering scholarship transfer student-athletes must achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 1.60 (based only on hours earned at ASU) during their first semester of enrollment at ASU in order to be eligible for practice at the beginning of the next semester at ASU.
  3. Once a student-athlete becomes subject to the 1.60 GPA rule, the student-athlete continues to be subject to the requirement as a condition of eligibility for practice on a semester-by-semester basis throughout the individual’s enrollment at ASU.
  4. The FAR has the authority to waive the 1.60 GPA requirement. If such a waiver is not granted, the student-athlete and the director of athletics (jointly) may appeal the matter to the Eligibility Appeals Subcommittee of the Sun Devil Faculty Athletic Board, whose decision in such matters shall be considered final.

Kinesiology (KIN) 310 Course and Full-Time Enrollment

The NCAA, the Pac-12, and the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) each define full-time enrollment for a student-athlete as 12 hours per semester. ASU has placed restrictions on the use of KIN 310, “Collegiate Sports,” for the purposes of satisfying this enrollment requirement. Student-athletes at ASU who enroll in the one-credit hour course, KIN 310, may not count this course towards meeting this full-time enrollment requirement because student-athletes must already be eligible for intercollegiate competition in order to be able to take this course. Thus, if this course were counted towards meeting the full-time enrollment requirement, any issue that resulted in a student-athlete’s ineligibility for competition could also affect that student-athlete’s full-time enrollment status and, consequently, eligibility for practice and athletically related financial aid as well.

The FAR may waive the requirement that KIN 310 cannot be counted towards meeting the full-time enrollment requirement. Should the FAR elect not to grant such a waiver, the student-athlete and the vice president for University Athletics (jointly) may appeal to the Sun Devil Faculty Athletic Board’s Eligibility Appeals Subcommittee, whose decision in such matters shall be considered final

Postgraduate/Postbaccalaureate Student-Athletes

Postgraduate/postbaccalaureate student-athletes must successfully complete six hours of academic credit applicable to any of the institution’s degree programs each term and maintain a minimum of 2.00 GPA

Continuing Transfer Student-Athletes

The percentage of degree completed must be certified immediately upon transfer if the student-athlete is entering ASU at the beginning of his or her third year or anytime thereafter.

Transfer student-athletes’ grade point averages must be certified for competition after their first full-time term of attendance at ASU.
