Sun Devil student-athletes have a special responsibility to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects well upon themselves, their teammates, their coaches, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, and the university as a whole.
Participation in ASU intercollegiate athletics is a privilege. This policy covers behavior both on- and off-campus. If a violation of the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct occurs, athletic privileges may be suspended or cancelled. This may include practice, competition, and scholarship penalties.
Consistent with NCAA Bylaw 15.3.4.1.2, the university may reduce or cancel athletic financial aid during the period of award for violation of the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct or for violation of ICA 405, “Drug Testing.”
It is the student-athlete’s responsibility to report to the coach and or the senior associate athletics director if he or she is involved in any type of misconduct, particularly as it relates to the law or campus policies. Self-reporting an incident immediately (within 24 hours) may help to reduce sanctions that may be imposed. If an incident is not self-reported, additional penalties will be incurred.
Each student-athlete receives a copy of the ASU Student-Athlete Code of Conduct Policy annually during athletics eligibility meetings.
Student-athletes are also responsible for following all university policies, including but not limited to, the ASU Student Code of Conduct in the Student Services Manual—SSM 104–01, the Student Academic Integrity Policy, and the ASU hazing prevention policy, ICA 404. In addition, student-athletes are expected to uphold the principles of sportsmanship and ethical conduct at all times.
