ICA 302: Sun Devil Life Skills
To explain the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics’ commitment to the holistic education of the student-athlete
National Collegiate Athletic Association
Department of Intercollegiate Athletics
In 1991, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Foundation initiated efforts to create a total development program for student-athletes. Through the collaborative efforts of the NCAA Foundation and the Division 1-A Athletic Directors’ Association, the Challenging Athletes’ Minds for Personal Success (CHAMPS)/Life Skills program was created.
ASU is a participating member of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program. ASU’s Sun Devil Life Skills focuses on the holistic development of the student-athlete and prepares student-athletes for the challenges of life beyond the playing field. In each of the five commitment areas identified below, ASU has developed programs and services to provide a learning environment that will serve as the foundation from which student-athletes mature into their full potential.
Programs and services support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation.
In a setting built upon the philosophical foundation of a broad-based, equitable athletic program that focuses on well-being, student-athletes are provided quality coaching, state-of-the-art facilities, top-of-the-line equipment, strength and conditioning programming, and medical support.
Student-athletes engage in service to the campus and surrounding communities through a program called Sun Devil TALES (Talk About Life Experiences through Sport).
ASU supports the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging personal growth and decision-making skill through a program called Sun Devil SPARK (Supporting Personal Achievement and Relaying Knowledge).
Student-athletes are encouraged to develop and pursue career and life goals through Sun Devil HEAT (Help Employ Athletes Today).
