EHS 408: Purchasing of Chemicals

Purpose

To ensure that regulated chemicals purchased are reviewed by EH&S to ensure regulatory obligations are met and to assist Principal Investigators in maintaining accurate laboratory inventories of these items.

Applicability

This policy applies to all uses of chemical substances by ASU employees, students, visiting faculty, and researchers at all ASU facilities.

Background

All chemicals purchased at ASU must be reviewed to address regulatory compliance related to quantities stored, safety procedures, and security requirements.

Policy

[horizontal rule]

No person may purchase chemical substances outside of the ASU designated chemical purchasing system without first obtaining approval from EH&S.

Responsibilities

Colleges, Schools, and Other University Departments

It is the responsibility of each college, school, and administrative department to conduct its operations in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations, and to implement this policy as follows, including but not limited to:

  1. informing all employees involved in specifying and procuring chemical substances of this policy;
  2. following required procurement policies;
  3. enforcing the requirements of this policy;

    and

  4. contacting EH&S to process any accompanying shipping and receiving documents.

Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S)

EH&S will:

  1. EH&S provides training as requested for the ASU Community to support this policy;
  2. EH&S will review and track purchases of chemicals substances outside of the ASU designated chemical purchasing system;

    and

  3. EH&S will maintain all records related to this policy.
