ACD 607–02: Contribution to Social Security

Purpose

To specify mandatory Social Security contributions and requirements for obtaining Social Security numbers

Applicability

All faculty and academic professionals, except nonresident aliens with “F” or “J” visas

Policy

All eligible faculty and academic professionals are required to contribute to Social Security and to obtain Social Security numbers, as indicated in the chart below.

ProcedureD

If	Then
Faculty member or academic professional has a valid Social Security number	Human Resources proceeds to process forms for employment.
Faculty member or academic professional has no Social Security number and is not exempt from federal and state taxes	Human Resources: requests that faculty member or academic professional apply for a Social Security number immediately and may assign a temporary number before proceeding with employment processing.
Faculty member or academic professional has no Social Security number and is exempt from federal and state taxes	Human Resources proceeds to process forms for employment.
