Approval Process

The university may offer an academic minor in any subject area in which it has an approved degree program. Any minor in a subject area for which there is no degree program, however, must be approved by the Board of Regents before the university may announce or offer the minor.

A department or other authorized campus unit may offer a minor by following the procedure below.

Regulations for Approved Minors

Double Counting

Courses may not be “double-counted” in the major and the minor. For example, an individual majoring in English and minoring in Women’s Studies may not count ENG 461 (Women and Literature) in both the major and the minor.

Involvement of Two Different Colleges

In those cases where the major and the minor are offered by faculty in two different colleges, representatives of both colleges must approve the program of study. Programs of study for individuals seeking interdisciplinary minors are approved by the administrative unit in which the minor is housed.
