A new academic department may be proposed by the action of a college faculty; in all cases, authorization of a new academic department is subject to the approval of the dean of the college. Authorization is also subject to approval by faculty governance, the executive vice president and provost of the university, and the president, who then recommend the proposed department to the chief academic officers and the Board of Regents for approval.
When a new department is authorized, it is assigned to a college, but it also serves other academic units to meet the needs of the university community. An academic department may, when duly authorized, embrace more than one major.
