Each college or school has a dean, appointed by the president, who serves at the pleasure of the president and performs such duties as the president and the executive vice president and provost of the university may assign. The dean is the executive academic officer of the college or school. Responsibilities of the dean include:

Dean of the Division of Graduate Studies
The dean of the Division of Graduate Studies has primary responsibility for the administration of the Division of Graduate Studies and Graduate Admissions. The dean of the Division of Graduate Studies serves as chair of the Graduate Council, which recommends policy on graduate education for the dean’s consideration. All matters pertaining to the initiation, development, and evaluation of programs offered through the Division of Graduate Studies are responsibilities of the dean’s office.
Dean of the Barrett Honors College
The dean of the Barrett Honors College has primary responsibility for administering the Honors College, for admitting students through the college, and for monitoring their progress through the college. The dean of the college is responsible for the development and integrity of the honors curricula throughout the university and serves as chair of the University Honors Council, which recommends policy on honors education for the dean’s consideration. All matters pertaining to the initiation, development, and evaluation of programs offered through the college are responsibilities of the dean’s office.
Dean of the College of Extended Education
The dean of the College of Extended Education has primary responsibility for coordinating and administering extended education programs. He or she is responsible for developing and implementing a plan to bring high quality education to nontraditional students. This dean serves in a leadership role with the other deans and off-campus constituents in executing a centralized system, which includes revenue sharing between extended education and the colleges. Components of the College of Extended Education include Academic and Professional Programs; Distance Learning and Technology, including Internet courses and Independent Learning; the American English and Culture Program; Extended Campus Programs; and the ASU Downtown Center.
Dean of University Libraries
The dean of University Libraries is the chief administrator of the University Libraries and reports to the executive vice president and provost of the university. Responsibilities include providing leadership and overall direction for the main campus libraries, including planning and establishing goals, priorities and policies for the recruitment and development of human resources, and the funding and development of collections, facilities, and services, including the implementation of advanced technologies. The dean of University Libraries plans and administers library fiscal resources; represents the university at state, regional, and national library functions; and coordinates library activities with academic programs to provide optimum service to the university community.
