The BS degree in Speech and Hearing Science consists of 40 semester hours of speech and hearing science courses emphasizing the developmental and scientific aspects of language, speech, and hearing. The following courses, or their approved equivalents, are required: SHS 250 Introduction to Phonetics (3) SHS 310 Anatomical and Physiological Bases of Speech (3) SHS 311 Physical and Physiological Bases of Hearing (3) SHS 367 Language Science SB (3) Choose two from the courses below (6) SHS 431 Developmental Speech Disorders (3) SHS 470 Developmental Language Disorders (3) SHS 485 Acquired Speech and Language Disorders (3) Total 37The remaining speech and hearing science courses to complete the major are determined by the students in consultation with an advisor. A list of approved electives is available through the department. Supporting courses from related fields must include the following or their equivalents: BIO 201 Human Anatomy and Physiology I SG (4) PSY 290 Research Methods is strongly recommended. Minor in Speech and Hearing Science The minor in Speech and Hearing Science consists of 24 semester hours with the following classes required: SHS 105 Introduction to Human Communication Disorders (3) SHS 250 Introduction to Phonetics (3) SHS 310 Anatomical and Physiological Bases of Speech (3) SHS 311 Physical and Physiological Bases of Hearing (3) Choose one from the courses below (3) SHS 367 Language Science SB (3) The remainder of the 24 credits must come from the following courses: SHS 320 Facilitating Speech and Language Development in Early Childhood (3) SHS 401 Introduction to Audiology (3) SHS 402 Modifying Communicative Behavior (3) SHS 431 Developmental Speech Disorders (3) SHS 465 Speech and Language Acquisition SB (3) SHS 470 Developmental Language Disorders (3) SHS 485 Acquired Speech and Language Disorders (3) SHS 496 Aural Rehabilitation (3) A concentration in speech and hearing science is available under the Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) degree, a program intended for the student who has academic interests that might not be satisfied with existing majors. Building on two academic concentrations (or one double concentration) and an interdisciplinary core, students in the BIS program take active roles in creating their educational plans and defining their career goals.
